Sharks Bite Eagles at End, 64-62

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Jonathan Janssen got layup with 5.2 seconds to play to lift Hawai'i Pacific University to a 64-62 come-from-behind victory over PacWest Conference newcomer Biola on Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.

The Sharks (10-8, 5-5) overcame a 14-point second half deficit to snap a three-game losing streak. The Eagles (6-12, 0-10) extended their losing streak to five straight.

Trailing by two points with under 10 seconds to play, Janssen, a junior forward of Noosa Head, Australia/Mountain State, got a rebound from a missed 3-pointer by Niksha Federico and was fouled pivoting for a follow up. Janssen made both free throws with 6.3 seconds to play.

Biola called a timeout, then couldn't get the ball inbounds as the Sharks forced a five-second violation. HPU used a timeout and followed with redshirt freshman guard Lorenze Gordon-Haynes of Columbus, Ohio/Africentric, finding Janssen wide open cutting into the lane on the inbound pass. Janssen dropped in the game-winning layup with 5.2 seconds remaining. Biola got the ball downfloor for a final opportunity, but a 3-pointer came off the front rim short as the horn sounded.

The Sharks were led by Federico, the senior forward from San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic, who notched his 11th double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Gordon-Haynes scored 13 points going 6-of-8 from the floor with a 3-pointer, while freshman guard Emil Isovic of Kristianstad, Sweden, tallied 10 points. Janssen posted nine points with six rebounds, two blocks and a steal.

Biola was paced by Trevor Treinen who had a game-high 21 points, with a double-double from Alex Talma with 15 points and 10 boards. Michael Bagatourian added 10 points. Isaiah Jones led the Eagles with 11 rebounds to go with seven point
HPU shot 42 percent (26-of-62) from the floor, with 7-of-28 (25 percent) made from the 3-point arc. The Sharks hit 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Biola hit 45 percent (21-of-47) from  the field, including 8-of-19 (42 percent) from the arc. The Eagles also made 12-of-17 shots (71 percent) from the charity stripe. Biola edged HPU on the boards 35-31, but HPU scored the Eagles 11-6 on the offensive glass. BU also suffered 13 turnovers to HPU's eight.

The Sharks and Eagles battled throughout the first half, with HPU using a 3-pointer by Isovic midway through the first half to start a 10-0 run to post an eight-point 21-13 lead with 8:36 left in the opening frame.

However the Eagles countered with a 13-4 run capped by a Treinen 3-pointer to claim a 3-point lead before the swapping scored with the Sharks to take a 29-27 lead at halftime.

The Eagles built a quick lead to start the second half before going on a 10-2 run to push the lead to 14 at 53-39 with 9:03 remaining. HPU responded quickly, with Gordon-Haynes getting a fast break layup nine seconds later to start a 14-0 run to tie the game at 53-all with 6:13 to go. Gordon-Haynes scored nine of his 13 points in that run.

Treinen put BU back on top, the Janssen followed with a layup and 3-pointer to give HPU its first lead in the second half at 58-55 with 3:48 to go. Biola answered, and traded the lead with HPU when Talma hit a 3-pointer with 1:03 to play to given the Eagles a 62-60 advantage.

Defense helped the Sharks as well after missing a layup with 34 seconds left. BU went for a layup with 26 seconds to play that was blocked by junior forward Spencer Vering of San Diego, Calif./Mater Dei Catholic and Federico collected the rebound. That set up the dramatic finish for the Sharks.

HPU closed a four-game Southern California swing with the contest and got back on the winning track to return to Honolulu. The Sharks start a key four-game homestand next Saturday as the host cross-town rival Chaminade. Tipoff at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center is schedule for 3 p.m.
