BELMONT, Calif. – Sophomore
Cameryn Collie produced a 20-20 match in leading Hawai'i Pacific University past Notre Dame de Namur 3-1 in PacWest Conference action Tuesday night at Gleason Gym.
The Sharks (9-13, 8-8) chalked up a three-match winning streak for the first time this season by beating the Argonauts (7-16, 6-9) 25-23, 25-19, 15-25, 25-19.
HPU collected an attack percentage of .236 with 12.0 team blocks, while NDNU tallied a .214 hitting percentage and 8.0 team blocks.
Collie, an outside hitter from El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge, posted her second 20-kill match, with 20 kills and 20 digs with a service ace and two blocks. Senior
Carson Pyle of Houston, Texas/Memorial put up nine kills with a season-high eight blocks, while freshman
Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah collected eight kills, five blocks and a team-high .368 hitting percentage.
The Argos got a double-double of 18 kills, 12 digs and a .366 attack from Kathlin Martinez, while Chantal Zahrndt added 13 points and two blocks and Rowan Jack double-doubled with 11 kills and 23 digs.
HPU and NDNU had nine ties in the opening set when the teams knotted at 13-all. That's when senior
Chandler Lippincott of Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista put down a kill to start a 4-1 run to give the Sharks a lead they wouldn't relinquish. HPU built a four-point lead at 24-20 before holding on to take a 25-23 win on another Lippincott kill.
Set two had NDNU up early, but after four ties, the Sharks took the lead to stay on a kill from sophomore
Abigail Wilmington of Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River that started a 6-1 run. Collie's kill put the Argos away 25-19 for a 2-0 set lead.
But NDNU didn't back down after the break and totally dominated the third set leading from start to finish. A 4-1 star capped by a kill from Emma Kleven, followed by a 5-0 run midway through the set as the Sharks couldn't get things together in falling 25-15.
The Sharks trailed 6-5 early in the fourth before going on a 5-0 run to take a four-point 10-6 lead on a kill from freshman
Lauren Christie of Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon. HPU extended the lead to 19-12 on an attack error by the Argos. That lead grew to 10 at 24-14 on a double-block from Ferris and Pyle. However, NDNU had a 5-0 run before Christie ended the set and match with a kill for at 25-19 win.
The Sharks leave the Bay area for their next match on Thursday as they travel to Fresno to meet Fresno Pacific. First serve is set for 4 p.m. HST (7 p.m. PDT) at the FPU Special Event Center.
