HPU Shut Out By Dominican 3-0

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University's women had a four-match unbeaten streak snapped on Sunday as Dominican (Calif.) defeated HPU 3-0 in PacWest Conference play at Kennelly Field.

The Sharks (3-4-3, 1-1-1) had won its last two games and tied the two before that prior to the loss. The Penguins (6-4-1, 3-1-0) won their fourth straight.

The Penguins dominated play from the get-go, outshooting the Sharks 11-5 in the contest, led by Michelle Li who contributed on all three goals.

Dominican put its first score on the board in the 16th minute when Alyssa Campbell's corner kick went to Li for a header, but went in off Penguin Bailey Kiser for the goal. Kiser's second goal of the year gave DUC the 1-0 advantage.

Six minutes later in the 22nd minute, the Penguins struck again. Campbell's corner kick into the box was again headed by Li – this time into the goal for a 2-0 lead. It was Li's fifth goal of the year.

The game remained 2-0 into the second half with the Sharks pushing forward offensively. But in the 53rd minute it was Li who served as the setup, crossing the ball past a defender to Lily Dubuc who punched it in for the 3-0 lead.

HPU was stymied by the Dominican defense, managing five shots with two on goal that were saved by Penguin keeper Alyssa Ramos.

HPU senior goalkeeper Lauren Spencer of Oxford, Mich./Oxford, had a tough day, recording two saves off the 11 DUC shots faced and allowing three tallies.

The loss concluded a four-game California road trip for HPU, who now returns to Oahu for a three-game homestand that opens on Thursday. The Sharks host Biola in PacWest Conference action at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex slated for 3 p.m., following the men's game between HPU and Biola.
