Sharks Drop Season Finale to Chaminade 2-1

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University closed the 2018 season on a down note as cross-town rival Chaminade handed HPU a 2-1 loss on Saturday evening at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The Sharks (6-10, 4-7) ended the season with their second straight loss, while the Silverswords (6-5-2, 5-4-2) snapped a five-match losing streak to HPU. CUH's last win against the Sharks was a 1-0 win on Nov. 1, 2014 at Atherton Field in Kaneohe.

Despite outshooting the Swords 27-8, HPU managed only one goal in the contest.

Chaminade never trailed in the match, collecting its first goal in the 34th minute when Reece Hambly pop passed to Noah Mokulehua for a breakaway that ended with a one-timer for the 1-0 lead.

That goal stood until the 83rd minute, when the Swords added an insurance tally. Tyler Ebisuya collected a long cross from the right side from Micah Mokulehua and drilled it in.

The Sharks, who peppered the goal all night, got an answering goal in the 86th minute when senior Tom Karshuening of Satrop, Germany/Gymnasium Walsrode broke free in a scrum in front of the goal to find freshman Makana Srivongsana of Honolulu/Kaiser open. Srivongsana poked in the net to bring the Sharks within one, but that was as close as they could get.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Max Austli of Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet made three saves with the two goals allowed against eight shots.

Chaminade keeper Michael Stafford posted seven saves against the one goal allowed while facing the Sharks 27 shots.

The PacWest Hawai'i Challenge contest was a chippy one, with nine yellow cards being issued in the game.

The game was the last of the season for the Sharks and the final game for four seniors: Karshuening, Connor Hylton of Rockville, Md./Rockville, Jordan Coxall of Chester, England/Christleton and Michael Steele of Ferndale, Wash./Ferndale.
