HPU Ends Season By Beating Chaminade 1-0

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University got a first half goal from Ebony Madrid and that was all it needed as HPU defeated Chaminade 1-0 in PacWest Conference play to close the 2018 season at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Saturday night.

The Sharks (6-6-6, 4-3-4) finished the regular season a perfect .500 and extended their winning streak   over the Silverswords (1-12-1, 0-10-1) to 22 dating back to a back to a 2-1 loss on Sept. 6, 2008.

The Sharks got the only goal of the game in the 37th minute when Madrid, a junior from Porterville, Calif./Ramstein (Germany), received a lob pass down the center from freshman Cheyenne Smith of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell and put the ball over the top of CUH goalkeeper Brandee Lane for her third goal of the season.

And it would be all the Sharks would need because of the senior night performance of senior goalkeeper Lauren Spencer of Oxford, Mich./Oxford who kept a clean sheet with seven saves against 10 Sword shots. Spencer, one of the top keepers in HPU history, recorded her fifth shutout of the season and 12th of her career.

The goal allowed by Lane was her only blemish, as she recorded 11 saves on 19 HPU shots.

The win brings a curtain down on the 2018 season and closes the career for seniors Spencer, Lennon Dobben-Annis of Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth, Josefine von der Berg of Gothenburg, Sweden/Donner Gynasiet, and Breanne Cremer of Wailuku, Hawai'i/Baldwin.
