HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University snapped its four-game losing streak on Monday night with a 90-83 victory over Emmanuel (Ga.) in a consolation semifinal in the Ala Moana Hotel Hoops In Hawai'i D2 Power Invitational at the Hawai'i Convention Center.
The Sharks (4-5) saw the Lions (7-6) erase HPU's 12-point second half lead and tie the game with 2.2 seconds left on a pair of Kendrick Colvin free throws.
But HPU junior
Ronald Blain of McDonough, Ga./Union Grove, scored seven of his game-high 21 points in overtime as HPU outscored the Lions 18-11 in the extra frame.
"I'm proud of the way we kept positive and played tough when we had some adversity late in the second half," said HPU head coach
Darren Vorderbruegge. "We hung tough with our plan and took care of business in the overtime."
Blain collected his first 20-plus game with 21 points and his first double-double of the season with a season-high 12 rebounds in leading the Sharks. Sophomore
David Rowlands of Dayton, Ohio/Moorpark scored a career-high 19 points hitting 6-of-9 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the 3-point arc. Senior
Jonathan Janssen of Noosa Heads, Australia/Mountain Creek State added 18 points with seven rebounds, while senior
Spencer Vering of San Diego/Mater Dei Catholic chipped in 10 points.
Colvin led the Lions with a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds to go with five assists. Brandon Simpson scored 13 points with nine rebounds before fouling out in overtime. Austin Greene scored 13 points and Nathan Williams 10 points.
HPU shot 48 percent for the contest (24-of-50), including 50 percent from the 3-point arc (9-of-18). HPU hit 33-of-42 free throws (79 percent). Emmanuel made 46 percent (28-of-61) from the floor, including 8-of-25 (32 percent) from the arc. The Lions connected on only 58 percent (19-of-33) of their foul shots. HPU dominated the glass 45-to-29, but turned the ball over a season-high 28 times to EC's 19.
Emmanuel collected the first five points of the contest and twice led by five in the first half, the last time with 14:47 remaining when Williams hit a 3-pointer. HPU answered with a pair of Janssen free throws to start a 7-0 run to take the lead on a pair of free throws by Blain. The Lions answered with a 6-0 to go back up by four on a Colvin layup midway through the half.
The Sharks took the lead on a jumper from Rowlands with 4:10 remaining in the half and stretched it to an eight-point advantage before settling for a 35-28 halftime lead.
In the second half the Sharks quickly built a 12-point 44-32 lead with 16:13 to go on a layup by
Scott Ulaneo of Rome, Italy/St. George's International, then kept a lead from eight-to-11 points for most of the half.
Following a free throw by junior
Neema Namdar of Sandy, Utah/Alta, HPU held a seven-point 67-60 lead with 2:38 to play. The Lions answered with a pair of free throws by Colvin and a trey from Williams to start an 8-2 run that pulled EC within one at 69-68 with under 25 seconds left before fouling Janssen who hit both shots for a 71-68 lead with 20.7 to go. Colvin was allowed to drive down floor for a dunk with 17.3 remaining to bring the Lions within a point a 71-70. HPU burned the clock to 4.1 when Blain was fouled. He made the first and was frozen by a EC timeout to miss.
Colvin got the board and was fouled with 2.2 in regulation. He made both to send the affair to overtime.
In the extra period, Emmanuel opened a three-point lead after a free throw by Williams, before a Sharks layup from Rowlands and a 3-point by Blain for HPU to claim a 77-75 lead with 2:34 to play.
Simpson returned the favor with a layup 20 seconds later, which the Sharks matched on a Rowlands jumper to take a lead HPU woulnd relinquish with 1:47 to go. HPU took advantage of the Lions fouling to get the ball back, adding a Vering layup and free throw and eight additional free throws in the final minute to claim the 90-85 win.
The Sharks advance to the fifth-place, consolation final on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Convention Center. HPU meets No. 11 Southern Nazarene, who defeated Western Washington 85-72 in the other consolation semifinal.
In the championship bracket on Tuesday, No. 20 Chaminade defeated Dallas Baptist 87-81 and No. 7 UC San Diego bettered Western Oregon 73-63. CUH and UCSD meet for the championship at 8 p.m., with WOU facing DBU at 5:45.
