FRESNO, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University got a pair of double-doubles and placed five players in double figures as they clobbered Fresno Pacific 86-66 in PacWest Conference play on Saturday afternoon at the FPU Events Center.
The Sharks (13-10, 8-7) opened a four-game mainland road swing with their second straight win, while the Sunbirds (5-20, 3-14) saw their losing streak extend to seven games.
"We played a very steady game and did what we were supposed to do," said HPU head coach
Darren Vorderbruegge. "I'm so happy to see Travon (Tarpley) start coming on. He's been doing a great job."
Tarpley, a freshman guard from McLean, Va./Langley, came off the bench to lead the team with his first career double-double with 15 points and a team-leading, career-best 11 rebounds. Junior forward
Spencer Vering of San Diego, Calif./Mater Dei Catholic also scored 15 points with six rebounds. Senior forward
Niksha Federico of San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic, posted his PacWest leading 14th double-double of the season, with 11 points and 10 rebounds with two assists, while redshirt freshman guard
David Rowlands of Dayton, Ohio/Moorpark had 11 points with three assists. Redshirt freshman Lorenz Gordon-Haynes of Houston, Texas/Jones, collected 10 points.
Fresno Pacific was paced by Sam Burt with 20 points and four rebounds, while Sam Holmes hit four 3-pointers for 12 points. Aamondae Coleman just missed a double-double with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Sharks shot 52 percent from the floor (31-of-60), including 35 percent (9-of-26) from the 3-point arc. HPU made 15-of-18 from the free throw line (83 percent). FPU hit 44 percent from the field (28-of-63), but just 23 percent (6-of-26) from the arc and 36 percent (4-of-11) from the charity stripe. The Sharks dominated the glass 43-26, while the Sunbirds held a 14-18 advantage in turnovers.
The Sharks and Sunbirds swapped scores early, but when the third tie of the contest was broken on a jumper by junior guard
Darnell Bettis of Los Angeles, Calif./University, it started a 14-2 run capped by a 3-pointer from junior forward
Jonathan Janssen of Noosa Heads, Australia/Mountain Creek. HPU held a double-digit lead that they would hold the rest of the contest. A Tarpley layup just before the horn gave the Sharks a 12-point 42-30 lead at the half.
HPU used an early 9-1 run to go up by 20 on a pair of Federico free throws and the Sharks rout was on. HPU later rolled out a 12-0 run capped by a Bettis layup that put HPU up by 30 with 6:14 to go and the Sharks just held the Sunbirds at bay, seeing their lead cut by a layup by Burt and a 3-pointer by Holmes in the last 30 seconds for the 86-66 final.
HPU hits the floor again on the mainland trip on Monday night at Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco, when the Sharks meet Academy of Art in a 5:30 p.m. HST (7:30 p.m. PST) contest.
