WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University made strong comebacks in both games, but dropped a PacWest Conference doubleheader to Biola on Monday night at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (7-5, 1-3) fell to the Eagles (9-3, 3-1) 7-5 and 10-9.
Senior first baseman
Wyatt Hoppie of Orange, Calif./Villa Park, led the offensive attack for the Sharks, going 4-for-9 in the two games with a home run, two RBIs and four runs scored. Sophomore shortstop
Matthew Tsutomi of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City was 3-for-6 at the plate in the two games, with two RBIs.
The Sharks dropped game one 7-5, despite having an early 2-1 advantage.
HPU collected a run in the second when senior catcher
Kreston Woods of Tempe, Ariz./DeNiza drove in Hoppie on a dropped sacrifice fly, then took the lead on a solo home run from as junior leftfielder
Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis in the third.
But Biola plated four runs in the top of the fourth, three of them on a bases-loaded triple by Brandon Cody with a sac fly from Joey Magro. The Eagles added two more in the sixth on a two-run homer from Jerron Largusa for a 7-2 lead.
HPU came back with a pair in the bottom of the seventh on Hoppie's two-run home run to left field, and plated another run in the eighth on a Tsutomi RBI single.
But HPU stranded a total of 10 runners as part of the loss.
Junior righthander
Charlie Brooks of Ventura, Calif./Buena (1-2) started and suffered the loss, allowing five runs and eight hits in 4.0 innings with three strikeouts. Junior righty
Jordan Gesling of Lennox, S.D./Roosevelt allowed two runs on three hits in 2.1 innings while walking four and striking out three. Sophomore righthander
Evan Spitzer of Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge closed the last 2.2 innings allowing just one hit and striking out four.
BU starter Wyatt Haccou (2-0) got the win, allowing two runs on four hits in 5.0 innings. Daniel Jang allowed a hit and a walk in the last 1.2 innings to grab the save.
HPU had a rough start to the second game as starter Billy Clemens (1-1) allowed five runs on six hits in the opening 2.2 innings to put the Sharks behind. Senior righthanded reliever
Evan-Thomas May of Buena Park, Calif./Oxford Academy gave up four runs – but only one earned – in 0.2 innings with two hits and two strikeouts. Sophomore lefthander
Conlan Myers of Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View went 1.2 innings allowing a run on three hits. Junior righthander
Joshua Savea of Gold River, Calif./Rio Americana threw no-hit ball the final 2.0 innings with four strikeouts.
Biola scored got an RBI single and two-run double from Ryan Gallegos in scoring five runs in the second and third innings, the witnessed two HPU errors in the fourth inning that allowed four runs to score.
But HPU would answer with three in the bottom of the fourth on an Eagle error, an RBI fielder's choice by Tsutomi and a sacrifice fly from senior rightfielder
Ryan Torres-Torioka of Holaualoa, Hawai'i/Konawaena.
Biola added a run in the sixth on a wild pitch that proved to be deadly.
The Sharks exploded for four runs in the bottom of the seventh of the seven inning contest. After getting the bases loaded, senior Cody Santana of Oxnard, Calif./St. Bonaventure HS, came through with a pinch hit RBI single. Then with two out, junior designated hitter
Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle forced in a run with a walk, and pinch hitter
Marc Sauceda of Temecula Calif./Chaparral followed with a two-RBI single up the middle to pull the Sharks within a run. But BU reliever Jang got Woods to fly out deep to center to end the game.
Biola reliever Devin Sutorius (1-0) was credited with the win as Jang picked up his fifth save of the season and second of the day.
The Sharks are off until Saturday when they host Point Loma for a PacWest doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Hans L'Orange Park.
