WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University saw No. 10 California Baptist have huge innings in the third and sixth as the Lancers routed the Sharks 18-2 in PacWest Conference action on Friday night at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (9-8, 3-6) posted two runs in the seventh against the Lancers (12-3, 5-0) to avoid the shutout. CBU, the PacWest leader, has now won six straight.
CBU hit the board in the second inning with a big double down the left field line followed by a base hit bunt. With runners on first and third, the Lancers scored on a passed ball.
The Lancers dominated in the third with a total of six runs on five hits including a single home-run down the left field line. They topped that with another run in the fifth off of a huge triple to right center followed by a sacrifice fly making it 8-0.
CBU continued their streak in the sixth with seven more runs off of only four hits, HPU made four errors in the inning.
HPU finally broke the shutout in the seventh with a single from junior
Tanner Tokunaga from Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City, and RBI singles from senior
Mitchell Bumann of Corona, Calif./Temescal Canyon, and junior
Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle.
The Lancers would score one more run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to end the game 18-2.
Junior
Marc Sauceda of Temecula, Calif./Chapparal (2-1) pitched 2.1 innings allowing six hits, seven runs, four walks, and tallied a strikeout; he picks up his first loss of the season. Senior Evan Thomas May of Buena Park, Calif./Oxford Academy went for three innings giving up six hits, seven runs (one earned) with a walk and three strikeouts. Junior
Christian Miller of Brementon, Wash./Central Kitsap pitched for 3.2 innings allowing five hits, four runs (one unearned), three walks, and recorded four strikeouts.
CBU's Dylan Stowell picked up his first win (1-1) for pitching 6.1 innings allowing six hits, two earned runs, three walks, and picking up nine strikeouts. Jacob McCarvel and Brody Robinson each pitched a third of an inning with McCarvel allowing two hits. Bryan Pope finished the final two frames giving up three hits with a walk and a strikeout.
The Sharks and Lancers are back in action Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. for a doubleheader at Hans L'Orange Park.
