Sharks Snag Non-Conference Twinbill from Red Hawks

KANEOHE, Hawai'i — Hawai'i Pacific University took both ends of a non-conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon, beating Martin Methodist (Tenn.) 2-0 and 4-3 at Howard Okita Field.
 
The Sharks (8-6) took early leads on the Red Hawks (11-9) and held on for both victories.
 
Game one was decided by a pair of solo home runs from the Sharks. The first came in the third inning from freshman Cieana Curran of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell who crushed a towering shot to right center. An inning later, sophomore Emilee Leonard of La Mirada, Calif./Saint Paul, homered to left field to give the Sharks the 2-0 lead they never relinquished.
 
Junior Alexis Morales of San Diego, Calif./Mater Dei Catholic pitched for all seven innings allowing just two hits and four walks. She also recorded three strikeouts and got the win bringing her to 3-2 on the season.

Martin Methodist's junior Baylie Mellott (6-4) threw all six innings allowing two earned runs off of seven hits.

The Sharks came back to bite again in game two in the 4-3 win over the Red Hawks.
 
HPU hit the board in the first inning with an RBI single from junior Jordan Curry of Farmington, N.M./Farmington to bring in junior Tiana Cantero-Kawelo of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua who reached on a base hit through the right side. The Sharks grabbed another run in the second off a huge double down the first base line from Curran. She was brought home by two fielder's choice outs.
 
HPU continued added two more in the third with a towering solo home run from senior Noelani Boyer of Carson, Calif./Banning to right center, her third of the season. Senior Kiana Wolfe of Redding, Calif./Enterprise, would continue the inning with a massive triple to right center bringing in freshman Mary Dungey of Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado for a 4-0 Sharks lead.
 
The Red Hawks reached the board in the fourth off of two wild pitches advancing the runners. They would come close to tying the Sharks in the sixth with two more runs off of an HPU fielding error and a base hit through the left side.

The Sharks were led by Boyer who went 3-for-6 on the day with her home run. Curran was 2-for-5 at the plate on the day including her home run to left center with two runs and an RBI. Cantero-Kawelo hit 2-for-6 with an RBI and a run.
 
Freshman Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista (1-0) pitched 5.1 innings allowing three runs -- two earned -- on eight hits with two walks for her first win on the season. Senior Gabriella Nowack of San Jose, Calif./Silver Creek pitched for the final 1.2 innings not allowing a hit and recording a strikeout. She picks up her second save of the season.
 
Kaylee Davis (4-4) pitched three innings for the Red Hawks allowing four runs on six hits and two walks to pick up the loss. Sydney Watson came in relief for the last three innings allowing two hits and a walk.
 
HPU is back on the field Wednesday afternoon to face off against Dixie State. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Howard Okita Field.
