BELMONT, Calif. — Senior
Noelani Boyer clobbered three home runs and drove in seven runs as Hawai'i Pacific University split a PacWest doubleheader against Notre Dame de Namur, winning 8-3 in the opener and falling 3-2 on the back end.
The Sharks (14-13, 7-9) racked up 10 hits in the first game, but the Argonauts (9-24, 5-7) held HPU to just two hits in the second contest.
Boyer, the senior from Carson, Calif./Banning, was 4-for-6 between the two games with three home runs, seven RBIs and three runs scored. She was 3-for-3 in the first game, with a two-run homer, a solo roundtripper and a two-RBI single to her credit. She had a two-run shot in the second game.
The Sharks scoring early and often in the first game, plating two runs in both the first and second innings. Senior
Sienna Santiago led off for HPU running out the bunt for a base hit, and then was sacrificed over to second by sophomore
Sierra Dias. Boyer racked up home run number six on the season making it 2-0 to start the game.
In the second inning, freshman
Cieana Curran started things off with a base hit of her own and stole second. Senior
Kiana Wolfe was walked and both runners advanced off of a base hit by Dias to load the bases. Curran and Wolfe were brought home from another base hit by Boyer making it 4-0.
The Argonauts slowly creeped back into the game scoring a run in both the third and fourth innings. NDNU's Taylor Haynes tallied two stolen bases in the third and was brought home with a base hit to end the shutout. In the fourth, three batters reached on walks and their only run was off of a wild pitch making it 4-2 at the end of four.
HPU didn't hesitate to regain the four run lead in the fifth with yet another home run from Boyer followed by a triple by sophomore
Emilee Leonard, and a RBI single from junior
Jordan Curry.
NDNU added its final run in the fifth with Aurora Adams stealing home to make it 6-3 HPU.
The Sharks topped their lead with two more runs in the sixth from Wolfe with a base hit and Santiago who reached on an NDNU fielding error. Both runners advanced when Wolfe stole third, and Dias brought them both home with a two RBI single ending the game at 8-3.
Leonard of pitched for six innings allowing three earned runs off of just three hits but walked eight batters. She picked up two strikeouts on the Argos and got the win bringing her to 2-3 on the season. Freshman
Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista closed out the game for the Sharks putting down the first three batters she faced.
NDNU's Sofia Garcia pitched all seven innings for the Argo's allowing eight runs (seven earned) off of ten hits and four walks. She picked up a strikeout but suffered the loss bringing her to 4-7.
The second game saw Notre Dame de Namur plate a pair of runs in the first inning on an Adams RBI double and a sacrifice bunt RBI from Melissa Garcia. Then added their third run on a sacrifice fly by Haynes in the fourth.
But it was a near pitching gem from NDNU's Delaney Pamplin that was the story. Despite three errors behind her, Pamplin had a no-hitter working against the Sharks for 5.2 innings.
Dias got a two-out single to break up the no-hitter and Boyer followed with her third home run of the afternoon to pull the Sharks within one at 3-2 after six.
However, HPU could not get back on the board in the seventh to fall 3-2.
Pamplin picked up her second win of the season (2-12), as she pitched all seven innings for NDNU allowing two earned runs on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Freshman Torres started game two for HPU going three innings allowing three earned runs on six hits. She didn't allow a walk but suffered the loss bringing her to 1-1 on the season. Senior
Gabriella Nowack of San Jose, Calif./Silver Creek saw the final three innings allowing just two hits and a walk.
HPU is slated for another PacWest doubleheader against Notre Dame de Namur on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. HST (Noon PDT) in Belmont, Calif.
