BELMONT, Calif. — Senior
Noelani Boyer smacked her fourth home run in two days as Hawai'i Pacific University once again split a PacWest doubleheader against Notre Dame de Namur, winning 7-3 in game one, but falling 8-2 in game two.
The Sharks (15-14, 8-10) split all four contests with the homestanding Argonauts (10-25, 6-8) in closing a long northern California road trip.
Boyer was 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI and two runs scored. Freshman
Cieana Curran went 4-for-7 with two RBI, and freshman
Mary Dungey ended the day at 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
HPU started the scoring with a run in both the first and second innings. Senior
Sienna Santiago led off for HPU being hit by a pitch to get on base. Sophomore
Sierra Dias sacrificed, and Santiago showcased her speed by getting to third on the play. Boyer's sacrifice fly to center field made it 1-0 to start.
The second frame was similar with junior
Jordan Curry hit by a pitch, and Dungey sacrificed her to second and Curran cranked an RBI double to put HPU up 2-0.
The Argonauts tied the game at two in the third inning following an HPU fielding error and a two RBI single.
HPU didn't hesitate to regain the lead in the fourth with singles from Dungey and senior
Kiana Wolfe. Both runs would score off of an NDNU fielding error giving the Sharks a 4-2 advantage.
The Sharks added to their lead in the fifth with the fourth home run of the series from Boyer.
The Argos retaliated with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth off of two base hits and a walk.
HPU sealed the deal in the final frame with two more runs. Both Boyer and senior
Alexa McCoin were walked and sophomore
Miki Takara pinch ran for Boyer. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Curry and Dungey brought them home with a two RBI single for the final score of 7-3.
Junior
Alexis Morales of San Diego, Calif./Mater Dei Catholic pitched all seven innings for the Sharks allowing three earned runs off of ten hits and two walks. She tallied three strikeouts in the process and picked up the win bringing her to 5-2 on the season.
NDNU's Audree Vicory pitched all seven innings for the Argo's allowing seven runs -- five earned -- off of nine hits and four walks. She picked up the loss bringing her to 2-5.
Game two started with the Argonauts stringing together a single, sacrifice and double in the second frame to take the early lead.
They strengthened their lead in the third with a two run homer from Aurora Adams to go up 3-0 after three.
HPU met its doom in the fourth inning with NDNU posting five runs on six hits and an HPU throwing error.
The Sharks finally hit the board in the fifth with Wolfe scoring on an Argos fielding error to make it 8-1. They tallied one more run in the sixth when Boyer singled, and Curran doubled her home to make it 8-2.
McCoin of Sacramento, Calif./Pleasant Grove, started for the Sharks pitching for 3.1 innings allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk. She picked up her first conference loss of the season (1-1). Curry pitched the final 2.2 innings allowing two earned runs off of four hits and picked up a strikeout.
The Argos Sofia Garcia pitched all seven innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with two walks. She tallied two strikeouts on the Sharks and picked up the win bringing her to 5-7 on the season.
HPU returns to Oahu for a PacWest doubleheader against Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday, April 7th. First pitch is set for Noon at
Howard Okita Field.
