AZUSA, Calif. – The No. 1 Hawai'i Pacific University fell in a heartbreaker Thursday afternoon as No. 13 Azusa Pacific upset the Sharks 5-4 at the M&B Tennis Complex.
The No. 1 Sharks (11-2) dropped their first match after gaining the top ranking last week. The No. 13 Cougars (13-6) picked up their second win of the week.
The tight match came down to the No. 1 singles point, where APU's Toby Miclat beat the Sharks No. 1 ranked
Lena Lutzeier in an 8-6 tiebreaker in the third set for a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 victory. It was the only lead the Cougars had on the day.
The Sharks opened the day taking a 2-1 lead following doubles action. Lutzeier and
Barbora Kijasova defeated Miclat and Petra Ivankovic 8-6 at No. 1, with
Lara Meccico and
Oceane Adam winning at No. 3 over Courtney Page and Mikayla Rinker 8-6. The final doubles point was also decided in a tie breaker as APU got on the board with an 8-7 (8-6) win at No. 2 as Diana Baumgartnere and Kara Hinton edged HPU's Leticia dos Santos and
Debora Echeverria.
HPU extended its lead to 4-3 after the first three finished matches in singles. APU evened the match at 2-2 with a win at No. 6 as Jackie Resler downed the Sharks Helosie Le Normand 6-4, 6-1. But the Sharks came back as 34th ranked Adam won at No. 4 over Kara Hinton 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, and 40th ranked Meccico beat 17th ranked Ivankovic 7-5, 6-1.
That's when the Cougars got a win from 65th ranked Baumgartnere at No. 3 over Echeverria 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) to even the score at 4-4 before Miclat clinched the upset with the win at No. 1.
HPU is back in action on Friday when they visit Cal State LA at 8 a.m. HST (11 a.m. PDT).
