LOS ANGELES – No. 1 Hawai'i Pacific University jumped out early and cruised to a 7-2 victory over Cal State LA on Friday at the CSULA Tennis Complex.
The No. 1 Sharks (12-2) did not lose a point until having the match in hand with seven points. The Golden Eagles (7-10) collected the final points of the match.
The Sharks swept the doubles points to get off on the right foot and kept it going. The No. 3 doubles pair of Leticia Gonzales dos Santos and
Debora Echeverria beat Clesey Ruiz and Snezana Ivanovic 8-4 just before 13th ranked
Oceane Adam and
Lena Lutzeier downed Elizaveta Sokolova and Mariko Sagara 8-3 at No. 2.
Lara Meccico and
Barbora Kijasova won at No. 1 over Isabella Lopez and Luciana Di Laura 8-4 for the 3-0 lead.
HPU kept it up during singles play as 37th ranked Adam made quick work at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lopez, then
Heloise Le Normand clinched the victory for the Sharks with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Ivanovic at No. 6, making it 5-0.
The nation's top ranked Division II singles player, Lutzeier, beat Sokolova 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1, then HPU got the strong win at No. 2 as 40th ranked Meccico beat 35th ranked DiLaura 3-6, 6-0, 10-2 for the 7-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles collected their first point with a three-set win at No. 5 as Ruiz edged Kijasova 3-6, 7-5, 10-7. CSULA got the second point as Sagara downed Echeverria 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4.
The No. 1 Sharks have two weeks off before facing No. 2 West Florida, No. 3 Columbus State and Valdosta State April 13-15 in Pensacola, Fla.
