Softball Sharks Sweep Vulcans on Saturday

HONOLULU — Hawai'i Pacific University used four-run innings in both games of a doubleheader to sweep neighbor island rival Hawai'i Hilo 8-2 and 4-1 in PacWest Conference action Saturday at Sand Island Park.

The Sharks (17-14, 10-10) evened their PacWest record, while the Vulcans (23-13, 11-7) lost for just the fourth time in their last 12 games.

The first game started with strong pitching coming from the Shark's junior Jordan Curry tallying four strikeouts in the first two innings.

HPU hit the board in the third inning scoring four runs. Senior Kiana Wolfe started things off with a base hit and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior Sienna Santiago attempted to sacrifice her to third and managed to get on base herself from a Hilo fielding error. Sophomore Sierra Dias was walked to load the bases, and HPU scored when Senior Noelani Boyer was walked. Freshman Cieana Curran brought home Santiago and Dias on a crushed double right down the first base line.  Curry tagged an RBI with an infield base hit to bring in Curran making it 4-0 Sharks.

They topped their lead with two more runs in the fourth when Wolfe tallied another base hit followed by Santiago running out the bunt to put runners on first and second. Dias attepted to sacrifice the runners forward and ened up reaching on a throwing error and advancing to second on an interference call. Meanwhile, both runners scored making it 6-0 Sharks.

Hilo had a small rebuddle in the fifth scoring two runs on two base hits with an error and a wild pitch to make it 6-2.

HPU sealed the deal in the sixth scoring their final two runs. Santiago singled to right field and advanced to second off of a fielder's choice. Boyer cranked a line drive to right center to score Santiago for run number seven. Sophomore Miki Takara pinch ran for Boyer, and she managed a stolen base which lead to a score on a wild pitch finalizing the game at 8-2.

Jordan Curry pitched for all seven innings allowing two runs (neither earned) on six hits and a walk. She grabbed five strikeouts in the process and picked up the win on game one bringing her to 3-5 on the season

Hilo's Cyanne Fernandez pitched the first two innings allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks. She picked up the loss bringing her to 14-5 on the season. Leah Gonzalez came in relief for the remainder of the game allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

The Sharks passed by the Vulcans in game two despite an early Hilo lead.

The Vulcans started early in the first with a run scored off of a stolen base followed by a wild pitch and a base hit.

HPU didn't take long to answer that with four runs in the third inning. The inning started with freshman Mary Dungey and Wolfe getting walked. Dungey stole third base and then Wolfe stole second on the next pitch. Santiago was walked to load the bases and two base hits from Dias and Boyer brought in the two runs to take the lead. Curran added to the lead with a huge triple to right center scoring Dias and Santiago taking it to the final 4-1 score.

The Sharks were led by the seniors in game one with Santiago going two for three with three runs scored, Wolfe going two for three with two runs scored, and Boyer hitting one for two with a run scored and two RBI. Curran also went two for four in game one with two RBI; she also went one for three in game two with her 2 RBI triple.

Senior Gabriella Nowack pitched for all seven innings allowing just one run on three hits and two walks. She took the win in game two bringing her to 4-3 on the season.

Hilo's Isabelle Mejia started the game going three innings allowing four earned runs on four hits and three walks. She grabbed a strikeout but took the loss for the Vulcans bringing her to 3-5 on the year. Leah Gonzales finished out the remaining three innings allowing just two hits while picking up two strikeouts.
