PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 5 Hawai'i Pacific University started strong and made a statement in stunning No. 2 West Florida 7-2 in women's tennis action Friday at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex at UWF.
The No. 5 Sharks (13-2) did not lose a point through until the last two singles points. The Argos (23-2) lost for the first time in 15 matches at home this season and had a six-match win streak snapped.
HPU opened by sweeping all three doubles points that set the table for the big win against home-standing UWF.
The Sharks 22nd ranked doubles team of
Lena Lutzeier and
Oceane Adam started the day by upsetting No. 8 Paula Coyos and Jordana Lujan 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, while Leticia Gonzales dos Santos and
Debora Echeverria won at No. 3 over Samantha Echevarria and Diana Vlad 8-3. The Sharks made it a clean sweep of the doubles as
Barbora Kijasova and
Lara Meccico won at No. 2 over Ines Nicault and Lais Bicca 9-7.
HPU, who hadn't played in two weeks, rolled through the top four positions in singles play.
No. 2 Lutzeier ripped through UWF's No. 13 Coyos 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1, while 12th ranked Meccico knocked away 57th ranked Nicault 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. HPU's 32nd ranked Adam needed a bit longer to get by 44th ranked Lujan, winning 7-6, 6-3 at No. 3. Then Echeverria of HPU won at No. 4 over Echevarria of UWF 6-4, 6-2.
The Argos picked up wins in the bottom two positions. Vlad claimed the No. 5 spot over dos Santos 6-0, 7-5, and Heather Mixon got by Kijasova 6-4, 7-5.
The Sharks next face No. 3 Columbus State on Saturday in Pensacola. The match at the Carson Tennis Complex is scheduled for 3 a.m. HST (9 a.m. EDT).
