KANEOHE, Hawai'i — Hawai'i Pacific University claimed both ends of a PacWest Conference doubleheader against Azusa Pacific on Monday afternoon at
Howard Okita Field 2-0 and 3-2.
The Sharks (5-3, 2-2) picked up their first conference wins of the season, while the Cougars (4-11, 0-4) remain winless in league play.
The Sharks were led by offensively senior
Noelani Boyer of Carson, Calif./Banning, who went 2-for-6 with a homer, a double and three RBI in the two games. Sophomore
Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman was 3-for-5 on the day and sophomore
Emilee Leonard of La Mirada, Calif./St. Paul went 2-for-6 with an RBI.
The Sharks got all their runs in the first inning in both games.
In game one, freshman
Cieana Curran led off the inning with a walk and Boyer followed by crushing a one-out, 3-2 pitch over the left field fence for the 2-0 advantage and the only runs in the game.
Junior
Alexis Morales (2-0)
of San Diego, Calif./Mater Dei Catholic, allowed just two hits to the Cougars in recording a complete game for the Sharks. She posted four strikeouts and hurled just 71 pitches on the day for her second win of the season.
Azusa Pacific's Kat Ung (2-5) worked all six innings against the Sharks, allowing two runs on three hits with three walks. She struck out seven Sharks, but suffered the loss of the season.
The second found the Sharks plating all three runs in the first. Again Curran led off with a walk and was brought home by Boyer with an RBI double to left center. Leonard followed with a double to center bringing home Boyer. After moving to third on a ground out, Leonard scored on a wild pitch to give HPU a 3-0 lead.
The Cougars answered in the fourth with an RBI double by Emily Moran, followed by an RBI single up the middle from Amanda Woods to make it a 3-2 contest. But APU would not score again.
Senior
Gabriella Nowack (1-0) of San Jose, Calif./Silver Creek chalked up a complete game going all seven innings allowing two runs on five hits with a walk. She picked up her first win of the season using only 66 pitches.
Azusa's Megan Mejia pitched six innings allowing three runs on seven hits. She struck out three Sharks and walked two.
HPU is back in action Wednesday afternoon for the first of two PacWest doubleheaders with Concordia (Calif.). First pitch is at noon at
Howard Okita Field.
