KANEOHE, Hawai'i — Hawai'i Pacific University took one of the two games against No. 19 Concordia Irvine on Wednesday afternoon at
Howard Okita Field, dropping the opener 4-0 and winning the nightcap 5-2.
The Sharks (6-4, 3-3) chalked up their first victory against a ranked opponent this season, while the Eagles (10-5, 3-3) lost to a non-ranked team from the PacWest for the first time this season.
Concordia pitcher Callie Nunes threw a one-hitter at the Sharks over six innings in the first game and faced only one batter over the minimum despite hitting three HPU batters. Nunes struck out 10 and did not issue a walk. Jordan Quinn pitched a perfect seventh with a strikeout for CUI.
The lone hit for the Sharks came in the fourth when senior
Noelani Boyer of Carson, Calif./Banning, laced a one-out single down the left field line. She was later erased trying to steal second.
Concordia hit the board in the first frame with an RBI double off the left field fence from Amy Eilefson, and added to its lead in the fifth inning with three more runs on three base hits, including a two RBI single from Eilefson.
Junior
Alexis Morales of San Diego, Calif./ Mater Dei Catholic, pitched six innings for the Sharks allowing four earned runs off of six hits and three walks. She takes her second loss of the season bringer her to 2-2. Senior
Alexa McCoin of Sacramento, Calif./Pleasant Grove pitched the final frame for HPU closing it in nine pitches.
The Sharks reversed the fortunes of the 19th ranked Eagles in the second game of the afternoon.
HPU jumped out in front in the first as freshman catcher
Mary Dungey from Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado, ripped a two RBI double off the left field fence driving in sophomore
Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman and Boyer. Concordia answered with a run in the second on an infield single from Mckinsey Thorpe to make it 2-1.
The Sharks were back in the fourth with three more runs. HPU loaded the bases with no one out and scored the first run on a wild pitch to bring home sophomore pinch runner
Miki Takara of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Maryknoll. The junior
Tiana Cantero-Kawelo of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua followed with a two RBI single down the third base line for a 5-1 lead.
The Eagles answered with a leadoff double in the fifth by Eilefson and a pair of ground outs to bring her home.
McCoin (1-0) threw for six innings allowing two runs off of ten hits with two walks to record her first win of the season. Senior
Gabriella Nowack of San Jose, Calif./Silver Creek pitched for the final frame and picked up her first save.
Grayson Harvey (4-3) pitched four innings for the Eagles allowing five runs -- all earned -- off of seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Quinn closed the game with a walk and three strikeouts.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon for a second doubleheader. First pitch is at slated for noon at
Howard Okita Field.
