KANEOHE, Hawai'i — Hawai'i Pacific University and No. 19 Concordia Irvine played both ends of a PacWest Conference doubleheader in extra innings before the Eagles won both by a run 1-0 in eight in the first game and 3-2 in nine in the nightcap.
The Sharks (6-6, 3-5) gave the Eagles (12-6, 5-3) a battle for the series with three of the four games decided by a single run.
It was a classic pitchers' duel in the first game between HPU junior
Jordan Curry of Farmington, N.M./Farmington and Concordia freshman Callie Nunes.
The Sharks big opportunity to score came in the third as senior
Kiana Wolfe of Redding, Calif./Enterprise walked, senior Sienna Santigo of Eleele, Hawai'i/Waimea reached on a CUI fielding error, and junior
Tiana Cantero-Kawelo of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua singled to load the bases with one out. But the Sharks left them stranded to keep the game scoreless.
Concordia loaded the bases in the top of the eighth and got the only score of the contest on a wild pitch by Curry that brought home Ryann Ferguson.
Meanwhile Nunes (5-1) again dominated HPU, allowing two hits and three walks on the day while tallying 12 strikeouts, including a strikeout with the bases loaded to win the game.
Curry (1-2) got the hard-luck loss for the Sharks. She went all eight innings allowing one run off of six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
The second game was scoreless until the fourth when the Eagles collected two runs off an HPU throwing error and an RBI single by Mckenzie Thorp.
HPU answered in the bottom of the fifth. After Wolfe crushed a double to right field, freshman
Cieana Curran followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Wolfe. Curran stole second, then came home on an RBI single through the right side from sophomore
Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman to knot the game at 2-all.
The game stayed that way, sending the second half of the twinbill to extra innings. In the ninth, CUI's Heather Nonora singled and stole second. Ferguson followed with a ball hit toward the shortstop side of second. Nonora and HPU shortstop senior
Noelani Boyer of Carson, Calif./Banning collided allowing the ball to go through and Nonora to scamper home over the objections of the Sharks. After an extended discussion between the umpires, the run stood giving CUI a 3-2 advantage.
The Sharks after a leadoff walk, a pair of two out singles allowed HPU to load the bases. But a bid to win the contest by Boyer fell short as a flyout to center to end the game.
Sophomore starter
Emilee Leonard of La Mirada, Calif./Saint Paul pitched six innings for the Sharks allowing two unearned runs off of six hits with four walks without a decision. Senior reliever
Gabriella Nowack of San Jose, Calif./Silver Creek (1-1) took the loss pitched the final three innings allowing one earned run off of three hits with a walk and a strikeout.
CUI starter Grayson Harvey pitched 4.2 innings allowing two runs off of four hits with two walks and three strikeouts but didn't get a decision. Nunes came back in relief for the final 4.1 innings holding HPU scoreless on three hits and two walks, with six more strikeouts. Nunes ended the day with 18 strikeouts on 206 pitches.
HPU is back at it Monday afternoon to face off in non-conference play against Martin Methodist (Tenn.). The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at
Howard Okita Field.
