Sharks Rip Up Silverswords in Doubleheader Sweep

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i — Hawai'i Pacific University allowed only one run in sweeping cross-town rival Chaminade 4-1 and 18-0 in five innings on Tuesday evening in PacWest Conference softball play at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park.

The Sharks (19-14, 12-10) never trailed and ran their win streak to four straight games. The Silverswords (10-28, 6-20) ran its losing streak to five straight games.

The Sharks were paced in the twinbill by the offensive play of senior leftfielder Sienna Santiago of Eleele, Hawai'i/Waimea, who went 5-of-7 from the plate, with two RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman catcher/third baseman Mary Dungey of Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado was 4-of-6, with two doubles, two RBIs and four runs scored, while senior rightfielder Kiana Wolfe of Redding, Calif./Enterprise was 4-of-5 with a double, a triple, four RBIs and four runs scored.

Junior righthander Jordan Curry (4-5) of Farmington, N.M./Farmington, picked up the win in game one, with a complete game allowing an unearned run on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Sophomore righthander Emilee Leonard (4-2) of La Mirada, Calif./Saint Paul was the game two winner in the circle with a five-inning complete game shutout allowing four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

The first game was scoreless until the third inning, when the Sharks scored twice on four straight singles including RBIs from Santiago and senior infielder Noelani Boyer of Carson, Calif./Banning.

The Swords collected their lone run in the bottom of the fourth after a pair of singles, then a Shark throwing error that allowed Rainelle Matsuoka to cross the plate for a 2-1 HPU lead.

HPU added two more runs in the top of the sixth, after a hit batter and a walk, when Wolfe belted a two-RBI triple down the right field line to give the Sharks a 4-1 advantage.

The Sharks shut down the Swords the rest of the contest.

The Sharks came out swinging to start the second game, scoring nine runs in the first inning, seven in the second and two more in the third as they crushed the Swords 18-0.

HPU sent 14 batters to the plate in the first frame, and collected the first runs on a 3-run homer to right center by Boyer, her 10th of the season. After a groundout, sophomore designated player Brazzlynn Tovio-Asato of Kapolei, Hawai'i/University Laboratory crushed a solo home run to left field, her first, for a 4-0 lead. HPU continued the hit parade, collecting scores on an RBI double by Dungey, a two-RBI double by Wolfe and a two-RBI single from freshman centerfielder Cieana Curran of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell to push the first inning score to 9-0.

After Chaminade got a single in the bottom of the first, but stranding the runner, the Sharks followed with seven more runs in the top of the second.

Three straight singles including an RBI single from Dungey put HPU up 10-0. After a walk loaded the bases, sophomore infielder Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman tripled down the right field line for three RBIs, and Boyer followed with another RBI single. Following another walk, Leonard helped her own cause with a two-RBI single up the middle as the Sharks moved the lead to 16-0.

An RBI single by Santiago and a Silversword throwing error gave the Sharks their final two runs with the 18-0 lead.

The teams played scoreless through the fifth inning when the game was halted by the eight-run rule.

The games are also a part of the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge Cup, in which the Sharks softball team has taken all four games played so far this season. HPU continues play in cup action this weekend as the Sharks travel to Hilo to face Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday afternoon. The games with the Vulcans, rescheduled from a rainout in February, start at noon at the UHH Softball Field.
