PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Hawai'i Pacific University men's tennis team returned to competitive play on Friday, falling at No. 6 West Florida 9-0 at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex at UWF.
The Sharks (1-10) played for the first time since beating Bethel on March 16. The No. 6 Argos (20-2) won their 10th straight match.
HPU dropped all three doubles points, but sent the No. 3 flight to extra play before
Adrian Elduque and Gerardo Irrarrazaal lost to Juan Cabrera and Nicolas Lecoutre 9-7. The Argo's 14th ranked pair of Serdar Bojadjiev and Lucas Sanchez beat the Sharks'
Maxime Gayte and
Benjamin Loccisano 8-2 at No. 1, while Nicholas Springer and Alfonso Castellano beat HPU's
Jack Lyttle and
Juan Erro 8-2.
UWF won all six singles points in straight sets.
At No. 1, 22nd ranked Lecoutre downed Gayte 6-3, 6-0, while eighth ranked Bojadjiev took down Loccisano 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2. Sanchez won at No. 3 over Lyttle 6-4, 6-2, while Cabrera won at No. 4 over Irrarrazabal 7-6, 6-4. UWF's Robin Rafaitin defeated Erro 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5, and Gerard Rodriguez beat Elduque 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.
The Sharks are back in action in a neutral site contest on Saturday in Pensacola as they face No. 3 Columbus State (Ga.) at the Carson Tennis Complex.
