No. 5 Sharks Downs No. 3 Columbus State 6-3

PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 5 Hawai'i Pacific University made it 2-for-2 against Top 3 competition as the Sharks took out No. 3 Columbus State (Ga.) 6-3 in women's tennis interregional play Saturday at West Florida's Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
 
The No. 5 Sharks (14-2) won their third straight match and collected their fifth victory against Top 10 opponents. The Cougars (19-2) saw its 12-match win streak snapped.
 
HPU took the top two doubles flights to claim a 2-1 lead and held on for the victory.
 
The Sharks 22nd ranked doubles squad of Lena Lutzeier and Oceane Adam beat CSU's 29th ranked duo of Natalia Kattah Paz and Candice Paya 8-4 at No. 1, while Lara Meccico and Barbora Kijasova downed Beatriz Lopez and Noa Davico 8-4 at No. 2. The Cougars won at No. 3 doubles, as Giorgia Vitale and Marleen Tilgner defeated Leticia Gonzales dos Santos and Debora Echeverria 8-4.
 
HPU followed by winning the top four singles points to win the match.
 
The biggest win came at No. 1 singles as second ranked Lutzeier won in three sets over fifth ranked Lopez 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.  The Sharks dominated the next three positions as 12th ranked Meccico beat 49th ranked Davicio 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2, 32nd ranked Adam downed Paya 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 and Echeverria won at No. 4 over Vitale 6-3, 6-1.
 
The Cougars Tilgner defeated dos Santos 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5, and Luise Sachs won over Kijasova in a super tiebreaker 3-6, 6-4, 10-7.
 
The Sharks close their Florida road trip with a match against Valdosta State (Ga.) in Pensacola on Sunday, then travel to Surprise, Ariz., for the PacWest Conference Championships next week.
