OAKLAND, Calif. – A pair of Hawai'i Pacific University errors in the fourth inning proved costly, allowing two unearned runs as Academy of Art edged HPU 2-1 in PacWest Conference play at Laney College Field on Friday.
The Sharks (17-25, 11-23) and Urban Knights (23-20, 18-16) played the contest in a snappy two hours and 10 minutes.
In a scoreless game to the fourth, ART U got a single, followed by an fielding error at short to put two runners on, then a dropped fly ball on a sacrifice fly by Zak May and an RBI single from Izac Bauer plated the two Urban Knights runs, the only two they would need.
HPU scored its only run in the eighth when junior centerfielder
Tanner Tokunaga of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City, doubled to right center and took advantage of two wild pitches to score. Tokunaga had nearly done the same in the sixth inning for the Sharks, but was thrown out at the plate for the final out in that inning.
The game was a pitcher's duel, with both starters getting complete games.
HPU lefthander
Joshua Muneno (2-2) of Honolulu/Maryknoll, threw a four-hitter, but got the hard-luck loss. Muneno suffered the two unearned runs, while going eight innings with no walks and five strikeouts.
ART U's Ben Kaser (6-4) allowed one run on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts and three wild pitches for the win.
Tokunaga led the Sharks offensively, going 2-for-4. Sophomore rightfielder
Ryan Torres-Torioka of Holualoa, Hawai'i/Konawaena chalked up his second triple of the season in the first inning, but was standed there.
In all the Sharks left seven runners on base for the game, while ART U stranded three.
HPU and Academy of Art wrap up the series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 9 a.m. HST (Noon PDT) at Laney Field.
