HPU Splits With Urban Knights on Saturday

OAKLAND, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University picked up a 9-3 win, but suffered a 6-2 loss to Academy of Art as the teams closed a PacWest Conference baseball series with a doubleheader on Saturday at Laney College Field.

The Sharks (18-26, 12-23) snapped a five-game losing streak with the win in game one, while the Urban Knights (24-21, 19-17) took the series 3-1 with the victory in game two.

Sophomore rightfielder Ryan Torres-Torioka of Holualoa, Hawai'i/Konawaena, had a hot bat for the Sharks, going 5-for-8 with a home run and four RBIs. Senior first baseman Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle, was 4-for-9  with a walk, while senior third baseman Wyatt Hoppie of Orange, Calif./Villa Park, was 3-for-9 with a home run and three RBIs.

Senior righthander Evan-Thomas May (1-1) of Buena Park, Calif./Oxford Academy threw a complete game in the opener, allowing three runs – two earned – on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Junior righthander Josh Savea (2-2) of Gold River, Calif./Rio Americano made his first start in the second game, but allowed all six runs in three innings plus four batters in the fourth, on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout. . Junior righty Christian Miller of Brementon, Wash./Central Kitsap, worked an inning allowing one walk, while while junior righthander Santiago Camarena of Houston, Texas/Clements was perfect in two innings and struckout three.

The Sharks opened the first game with a bang. Kapeliela reached on a two-out double to left and Hoppie followed with a two-run homer to left to put HPU up 2-0 in the first.

The Urban Knights responded with a run in the third on an error on a pickoff attempt, then took the lead in the sixth on an RBI double by Isac Bauer and an RBI single from Marciano Reichel for a 3-2 lead.

HPU came back in the top of the seventh after junior centerfielder Tanner Tokunaga of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City, singled to lead off the inning. He came home on an ART U fielding error that allowed Kapeliela to reach. After two walks to load the bases, both senior shortstop Mitchell Bumann of Corona, Calif./Temescal Canyon and senior catcher Kreston Woods of Tempe, Ariz./DeNiza drew RBI walks to give HPU a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the eight, HPU added a sixth run as Hoppie smacked an RBI single through the right side of the infield, scoring Torres-Torioka.

HPU wasn't done as the Sharks plated three more in the top of the ninth to put it away. The Sharks loaded the bases and Woods scored on a balk by pitcher Ben Clegg. Torres-Torioka followed with a two RBI single to left center and the Sharks had all the runs they needed to win 9-3.

ART U reliever Mason Verhees (0-1) got the loss, working 5.2 innings and allowing three unearned runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Clegg allowed three runs, all earned, on four hits in working the ninth. Starter Alex Fernandez allowed two runs on three hits in the first inning.

The seven-inning second game found Academy of Art starting fast with three runs in the first inning and never looking back.

The Urban Knights put two on in front of Bauer who blasted a home run to left field for an early 3-0 lead.

The Sharks used the long ball to come back as well. After a two-out walk by Tokunaga, Torres-Torioka ripped his second home run of the season to pull HPU back within a run at 3-2.

But ART U answered with a run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Bauer, then plated two more in the fourth on an RBI single by Taj Dawson and a sacrifice fly by Angel Mora.

HPU didn't get a runner on again until the seventh, but a game-ending double play gave the Urban Knights the 6-2 win.

ART U pitcher Chris Petrosie (4-1) went all seven innings allowing the two runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

The Sharks return to Hawai'i to close out the season with their final two series against Hawai'i Hilo. HPU is at UHH for a doubleheader next Saturday starting at 3 p.m., with a single game on May 6 at Noon. The Vulcans come to Oahu on May 12 and 13 to end the year.
