OAKLAND, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University picked up its first volleyball win of the season, beating Humboldt State 3-1, and fell to Western Oregon 3-0 in the final day of the Division II West Region Showcase hosted by Holy Names University.
The Sharks (1-5) took the Lumberjacks (2-4) 25-12, 24-26, 25-15, 25-19 to open the second day of the classic. The Sharks fell to the Wolves (3-4) in straight sets 25-19, 25-22, 25-19 in their final match.
HPU rolled to victory against Humboldt hitting .281 with 12.0 team blocks, as HSU hit .115 with 7.0 team blocks in the game.
The Sharks had three players with double-digit kills, led by freshman
Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah with 13 and a .333 hitting percentage with five blocks. Sophomore Camryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge, double-doubled with 11 kills and 10 digs, while senior
Carson Pyle of Houston, Texas/Memorial hit .500 with 10 kills and six blocks.
The Jacks got 11 kills from Lenox Loving, with five blocks from Savannah Horton.
Against Western Oregon, the Sharks hit a .329 – their best of the season – to go with 6.0 team blocks. The Wolves answered by hitting .446 with 8.0 team blocks.
Junior
Perla Escobar of Calexico, Calif./Calexico led the charge for HPU, recording 11 kills with a .455 hitting percentage. Collie added seven kills, while Pyle put up six kills with a .455 attack and four blocks.
WOU's Jenna Compton hit a phenomenal .750 and led the match with 12 kills. Mariella Vandenkooy posted 11 kills with a .400 attack and Morgan Haskett collected seven blocks with six kills.
The Sharks are off until next Saturday, when they open their home campaign and PacWest Conference play against Notre Dame de Namur in Castle Gym at St. Andrew's Priory. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
