HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University made it back-to-back sweeps as HPU ripped Academy of Art in straight sets in PacWest Conference action on Sunday evening at James Castle Gym at St. Andrew's Priory.
The Sharks (5-10, 4-5) downed the Urban Knights (0-17, 0-9) 25-13, 25-17, 25-16.
It was the best attacking game of the season for the Sharks, who hit .512 in the three set match, with only six errors, to go with 6.0 team blocks. ARTU hit .232 with 2.0 team blocks.
HPU was led by the outstanding play of sophomore outside hitter Camryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge, who set a career high with a .727 attack percentage and led the Sharks with a season-best 17 kills. She also posted three service aces and notched a block. Senior middle hitter
Carson Pyle of Houston, Texas/Memorial posted 10 kills with a .615 attack percentage and a game-high four blocks. Freshman
Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah had nine kills with a.692 hitting percentage with a block.
Academy of Art was paced by Jillian Wheaton with eight kills, a block and a .571 hitting percentage, while Ashley Pawlak had six kills and Safua Elisaia had five.
HPU trailed only twice in the match, losing the opening points of the first and second sets, and were tied with ARTU just four times.
HPU and ARTU exchanged the first few points before the Sharks got a Ferris kill to start an 8-0 run to open up a 13-4 lead and never looked back. A Collie kill finished the opener 25-13.
A service ace by Urban Knight Picabo Reinhold again put ARTU up 1-0, then a Collie kill started a 6-1 run and HPU rolled again. Ferris' kill started a 6-2 late in the set to extend the lead before the Urban Knights added other point. HPU built the lead back to nine at 22-13 on an ace by junior
Amanda Acosta of Exeter, Calif./Extra Union, then held on to win the set 25-17.
The final set belonged to the Sharks who opened with a 12-4 run capped by back-to-back Collie aces. The Sharks allowed ARTU to get within 18-12 before using a 7-4 run and closed out the match on a kill from Pyle to pick up their second consecutive sweep with the 25-16 triumph in the third.
HPU is idle until next Sunday, when the Sharks visit the Big Island to face Hawai'i Hilo in a PacWest Hawai'i Challenge match. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the UH Hilo Gymnasium.
