Freshmen help Sharks Knot No. 2 UC San Diego 1-1 in Double Overtime

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Led by a freshman goalkeeper in her first collegiate game, the Hawai'i Pacific University women made a major statement on Tuesday afternoon as the Sharks tied No. 2 UC San Diego 1-1 at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.

The Sharks (0-1-1) stopped the Titons (2-0-1) on all but one shot attempt and scratched out a score in the second half to break the Tritons all-time Oahu winning streak at five games.

Freshman goal keeper Marissa Froio of Simi Valley, Calif./Royal tallied 11 saves for the Sharks against the No. 2 Tritons in 110 minutes, while allowing one goal. UCSD blasted 27 shots against her. HPU attempted 16 shots against UCSD's Angelica Ramos who posted three saves with a goal allowed.

"I'm so proud of our team," said HPU coach Gina Brewer. "We tied one of the top teams in the nation. Played with them step for step. We proved we can play with anyone."

The Tritons, currently ranked No. 1 in Division II's West Region, collected their only score in the 41st minute off a set piece. Ashlynn Kolarik recovered a deflected free kick on the left side of the box and powered it past the Shark keeper to take a 1-0 lead.

The teams battled throughout the second half with UCSD holding onto the 1-0 advantage, until the 82nd minute. That's when the Sharks answered with a set piece goal of their own.

After a foul against the Tritons, HPU sent a free kick into the box. After a rebound off a Triton, freshmen Tehani Furuta of Mililani headed the ball into the net to send the game to a tie.

UCSD pounded the Sharks with four shots in the final seven minutes of regulation, three of which Froio saved. HPU had a great opportunity for a win in the final minute, but a pair of shots from junior Ebony Madrid were turned away.

In the golden goal overtime periods, UCSD rifled six shots at HPU with Froio recording four saves. HPU had four of its 16 shots in extra time.

HPU's goal in the second half was also just the second goal the Triton's had ever allowed in Oahu. Prior to Tuesday's game, UCSD had outscored its opponents 12-1 in Honolulu county with a 5-0 record.

The Sharks play again on Sunday at 3 p.m. against Eckerd (Fla.) at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.  UCSD meets future Big West Conference opponent Hawai'i on Friday at 7 p.m. at Waipio Stadium.
