Sharks Fall At Holy Names 70-65

OAKLAND, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University saw homestanding Holy Names go on a 6-0 run in the final minute to beat the Sharks 70-65 on Saturday night at Tobin Gym.
 
The Sharks (5-12, 2-10) had overcome a five-point deficit to grab the lead before the Hawks (9-11, 8-7) got the go-ahead score and made all four free throws down the stretch. HNU won its second straight and five of its last six games.
 
senior Jonathan Janssen of Noosa Heads, Australia/Mountain State, who hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:28 remaining, led the Sharks with 16 points to go with his four rebounds. Junior Neema Namdar of Sandy, Utah/Alta produced 13 points, while junior Ronald Blain of McDonough, Ga./Union Grove collected 12 points. Senior guard Darnell Bettis of Los Angeles/University led the Sharks with seven rebounds to go with seven points and three assists.
 
Holy Names put four players in double-figures, led by Kyvonte Davis with 14 points and eight assists, Bobby Kazar with 11 points, Jewels Sanders with 10 points, and Alonzo Taylor with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
 
HPU shot 44 percent from the field (24-of-54), including 6-of-16 (38 percent) from the 3-point arc. The Sharks hit 11-of-13 (85 percent) from the free throw line. Holy Names shot 46 percent from the floor (26-of-56), including 8-of-27 (30 percent) from the arc. The Hawks made 10-of-12 (83 percent) from the charity stripe. Holy Names edged HPU on the glass 30-28 and both teams suffered 15 turnovers.
 
The tight game featured 11 lead changes and five ties.
 
The Sharks jumped out to an early lead with a 9-2 run in the first four minutes thanks to a Janssen 3-pointer and capped with an jumper from junior Scott Ulaneo of Rome, Italy/St. George's International, but the Hawks answered with an 8-0 run of their own.
 
The teams battled to a 21-all tie with 5:06 remaining in the first half before Janssen got back-to-back layups to spark the Sharks to a 10-2 run for an 8-point 31-23 lead with 2:41 in the half on a Blain 3-pointer. However, the Hawks rallied with an 8-0 run on 3's from Taylor and Davis. Blain scored a pair of free throws in the last 10 seconds to give HPU a 33-31 lead at intermission.
 
HPU and HNU traded the lead during the early part of the second half before the Sharks used a 7-0 run to grab an eight-point 52-44 lead on Ulaneo's layup with 10:51 remaining. HPU maintained the advantage to lead 56-48 after a pair of Janssen free throws with 8:40 to go.
 
But that's when the Hawks went on 12-0 run in the next three-and-a half minutes to flip the game and take a 60-56 lead on a David 3-pointer with 5:07 left. The Hawks pushed it out to a 64-59 advantage on a Kazar free throw with 2:32 left.
 
HPU made its final push starting with a layup-free throw 3-point play by Namdar and after an offensive foul by HNU's Taylor, the Sharks got the trey from Janssen to take the lead at 65-64 with 1:28 to play.
 
The Hawks missed a 3-point attempt, but an offensive rebound and put-back by Davis put Holy Names back on top 66-65.
 
HPU missed a shot and a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left, but when the Hawks got the rebound HPU had to foul to get the ball back. HNU's Cameron Fini hit those two free throws and after another missed HPU 3-point attempt, hit two more with 1.2 seconds left to clinch the contest.
 
The Sharks come home for a five-game homestand starting on Wednesday against Azusa Pacific. Tipoff at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center is set for 6:30 p.m. following the women's game between the schools.
