HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University swept Fresno Pacific in straight sets for the second time this season with a 3-0 PacWest Conference victory on Wednesday night at The Shark Tank.
The Sharks (12-6, 8-2) trounced the Sunbirds (2-17, 1-9) 25-15, 25-16, 25-19 for their eighth win in their last nine matches. HPU also swept FPU on Sept. 28 in Fresno.
The Sharks hit .349 with seven team blocks, while Concordia hit just .117 with six team blocks.
Senior
Perla Escobar of Calexico, Calif./Calexico continued her torrid streak by leading HPU 17 kills on a .393 attack with two blocks. She just missed a double-double with nine digs. Junior
Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge notched her 10th double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs, to go with a hitting percentage of .393 and two blocks. Sophomore
Kirah Boynton-Brown of Vancouver, Wash./Union was a part of all but one HPU blocks as she recorded six in the match.
Corinne Acosta led the Sunbirds with a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs with two blocks. Makena Ogas added nine kills, while Jaal Sotoa-Stuebing posted four blocks.
The Sharks trailed only twice in the match when FPU scored the opening point in the first and third sets. HPU quickly recovered to lead by 3-2 in each and never trailed again.
The opening set saw HPU use a 6-0 early run to set the tone, then added a 9-2 run capped by a service ace from sophomore setter
Cara McClean of Beaverton, Ore./Southridge for a 16-6 lead. HPU built the lead to 21-10 before swapping points with FPU. Junior setter
Casey Davenport of Auburn, Wash./Mountainview, ended the set with a dump attack for the 25-15 win.
The second set started for the Sharks with a 4-1 run. HPU added 4-0 and 5-0 runs repeatedly and rolled on to the win. McClean got a kill off an assist by sophomore
Emily Joseph of Modesto, Calif./Gregori for the 25-16 set winner.
The final set saw the Sharks overcome an 0-2 deficit with an 8-1 run and never look back. HPU played 12 players in the final frame and saw a Sunbird squad battle with them, but the Sharks prevailed. Sophomore
Makenna Gambee of Hillsboro, Ore./Hillsboro ended the match with a kill for the 25-19 win.
The Sharks don't have time to enjoy the triumph as they are back at it on Thursday. HPU hosts Dominican (Calif.) in a 7 p.m. match at The Shark Tank.
