HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University collected its fourth straight sweep in downing Notre Dame de Namur 3-0 in PacWest Conference action on Saturday night at The Shark Tank.
The Sharks (14-6, 10-2) decimated the Argonauts (2-15, 1-9) 25-15, 25-21, 25-15 for their 10th win in the last 11 matches, with eight of those wins sweeps. HPU also swept Dominican on Oct. 3 in Belmont, Calif.
HPU hit .307 with six team blocks in the victory, while NDNU hit only .057 with two team blocks.
Junior
Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge led the Sharks hitting .409 with a double-double of 10 kills and 15 digs. Senior
Perla Escobar of Calexico, Calif./Calexico just missed a double-double with nine kills and 11 digs to go with three blocks. Sophomore
Lauren Christie of Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon also tallied nine kills, while sophomore
Makenna Gambee of Hillsboro, Ore./Hillsboro led the Sharks with five blocks.
Chantal Zahrndt and Samantha Shaffer each posted six kills to lead the Argos, with Destiny Williams and Kyahana Robinson recording two blocks each.
The Sharks took control of all three sets, with only five ties and four lead changes in the entire match.
HPU and NDNU exchanged the lead in the first four points of the opening set. Then when Collie put down a kill to give HPU the 3-2 lead, the Sharks went on a 5-1 run and never gave it up. HPU ended the set on a 5-0 run with Gambee chalking up a kill and a block to win the set 25-15.
The Sharks used a 4-2 run to open the second set with the lead. HPU opened the set up with an 8-2 run midway through for a 19-11. But the Argos fought back, closing the gap to three at 21-18. HPU responded a kill and a service ace from Escobar, followed by a Gambee kill for a 24-18 advantage. The Argos again closed to three at 24-21 after a pair of Shark errors before Collie ended the set with a kill for the 25-21 win.
The Argos battled hard early with the Sharks, only to have HPU go on a 9-1 run to take control at 14-5 after a kill from sophomore
Emily Joseph of Modesto, Calif./Gregori. HPU got the lead up to 21-10 before swapping points with NDNU until Christie's final kill ended the match with the 25-15 third set win.
After playing three matches in four days, the Sharks get some recovery time before returning to competition. HPU hosts Point Loma in the Sharks next match on Friday, Oct. 25. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at The Shark Tank.
