Penguins Nip Sharks 2-1

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University pounded shot after shot at Dominican (Calif.), but could only get one to score as DUC beat HPU 2-1 in PacWest Conference play Monday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The Sharks (4-4-2, 2-2-1) closed their homestand by falling to an even .500 for the season, while the Penguins (4-7-1, 3-3-0) swept the Hawai'i trip with their third straight victory.

HPU fired a season-high 22 shots on the evening, but only six were on goal as DUC goalkeeper Ruben Raygoza made five saves and allowed a goal.

The Penguins attempted 13 shots – 10 on goal – with HPU junior goalkeeper Jeremy Zielinski of Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead, recording a season-high eight saves and allowing two goals.

Dominican scored first on a short corner as Luke Raley sent the ball to Arturo Carrillo Contreras who setup a header by Brendan Adame for a goal in the 30th minute for the 1-0 lead which held through the half.

The Sharks kept the pressure up, but had open shots slide wide.

The Penguins got the insurance goal in the 84th minute as Eddie Silverbush redirected a clearing attempt and got the ball to Luke Raley who popped it in the net for the 2-0 advantage.

HPU got on the scoreboard in the 88th minute when senior Jair Espinoza of San Miguel Petapa, Guatemala was fouled inside the penalty area. Senior Gerrit Arzberger of Munich, Germany took the penalty kick and blasted it by Raygoza to make it 2-1.

HPU couldn't get another shot attempt in the final two minutes.

The Sharks start a nine-day, four-game southern California road swing this weekend, opening the trip at No. 1 Azusa Pacific. Kickoff at Cougar Soccer Field is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. HST (3:30 p.m. PDT).
