SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University continued its roll through Northern California by sweeping Dominican (Calif.) 3-0 in PacWest Conference play on Saturday at the Conlan Center.
The Sharks (10-5, 6-1), who are alone in third in the PacWest, rocked the Penguins (1-10, 1-4) 25-20, 25-16, 25-11 to close their northern California road trip. HPU dropped only one set in the five matches it played.
The Sharks hit .238 in the win while recording five team blocks, while the Penguins hit just .034 with two team blocks.
Once again the star of the match was junior
Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge who racked up her fourth straight double-double with 17 kills and 14 digs in the three-set match. Collie missed by one dig at Fresno Pacific of posting a double-double in each match of the trip. Collie also notched her eighth double-double of the year. She also hit .333 for the match with a block.
Senior
Perla Escobar of Calexico, Calif./Calexico and sophomomre
Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah each chalked up seven kills, while Ferris led the Sharks with four blocks.
Dominican was led by the play of Edee Leslie with seven kills, while Eleni Loizou had four kills with two blocks.
The Penguins exchanged the lead a few times with the Sharks until getting a run to take a 14-11 lead. HPU battled back to force three ties and used a 5-1 run capped by a Collie kill to take a 20-17 lead. The Sharks led the Penguins back within two, but an Escobar kill and a service ace from senior
Amanda Acosta of Exeter, Calif./Exeter Union put the Sharks back on track. Junior
Casey Davenport of Auburn, Wash./Mountainview dished up a service ace to give HPU a 25-20 win.
The second set had DUC taking the first point, only to have the Sharks respond with a 9-2 run and HPU never looked back. HPU built a 21-13 lead in the set before the home-standing Penguins chipped back to 23-16. HPU quickly scored on a kill from sophomore
Kirah Boynton-Brown of Vancouver, Wash./Union and a DUC attack error for the 25-16 second set win.
Dominican again scored first in the third, but the Sharks got a three-point run to take the lead they wouldn't relinquish. Up 5-4, a Collie kill spurred an 8-0 run that broke the Penguins will. HPU went on short runs through the rest of the set while maintaining control. Collie's 17th kill gave the Sharks the 25-11 win.
After playing away from home since Sept. 7, the Sharks return to The Shark Tank on Thursday to start a nine-match homestand that runs to Nov. 6. HPU hosts Biola at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
