Sharks Shutout Academy of Art 1-0

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Sophomore Tehani Furuta's 70th minute goal was the only score of the game as Hawai'i Pacific University shutout Academy of Art 1-0 on Monday evening at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The Sharks (8-7-1, 5-5) snapped their four-match skid with the win as they outshot the Urban Knights (7-7-3, 3-6-2) 16-11 with multiple shots coming off the crossbar and side posts.

Neither team was able to capitalize in the first half despite five shots on goal in the first six minutes of play by ART U.

HPU had chances as well including senior Emily Lemus of Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda getting a penalty kick from a hand ball in the box, but the shot rocketed off the top right of the cross bar.

Furuta, a sophomore from Mililani, Hawai'i/Mililani broke the silence in the 70th minute with a shot outside of the top of the box that hit an ART U defender as it went in the net on the far right side.

Freshman Mya Tolentino of Waipahu, Hawaii/Waipahu nearly added another as she managed a double bar shot from the far right side outside the box that ricocheted off the crossbar, angling down to hit the left side post before the Urban Knights keeper got a hand on it.

HPU senior goalkeeper Gretchen Berkey of Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass posted ten saves on eleven shots and picked up her second career shutout moving to 2-3-1 on the season.

ART U's Nicole Peoples suffered the loss on the night facing 16 shots with five saves and the goal against. She moved to 0-3 on the year.

HPU will close out the season on Saturday against Holy Names at Waipio Staduim. The senior night contest kicks off at 4:30 p.m.
