Sharks Grab First Win of Season In Washington

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Hawai'i Pacific University grabbed its first victory of the season on Tuesday night in cruising to a 92-50 victory over Northwest Indian College at Lummi Nation High School Gymnasium.

The Sharks (1-2) trailed by one point early in the first half before 10-0 run to put away the Eagles (1-7).

Redshirt freshman Ryan Godges of Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos came off the bench to lead the Sharks with 18 points, going 6-for-10 from the 3-point arc. Freshman Lachlan Viney of Melbourne, Australia/Mazenod added 11 points off the bench. Starting senior forward Ronald Blain of McDonough, Ga./Union Grove grabbed 10 rebounds.

Stanson Etsitty led the Eagles with 11 points off the bench, while Khalil Chaffon added nine poirts. Bradon Flett led NWIC with five rebounds.

HPU shot 53 percent from the field (36-of-68), with a whopping 17-of-42 (41 percent) from the 3-point arc. The Sharks went 3-of-7 (43 percent) from the foul line. NWIC shot 35 percent (21-of-60) from the floor, with only 2-of-21 (10 percent) from the arc. The Eagles made 6-of-11 (55 percent) from the free throw line. The much taller Sharks outrebounded the Eagles 53-21, but suffered 20 turnovers to NWIC's 15.

The game was tight through the opening seven minutes as the Eagles grabbed a lead for the first time and held it at 20-19 with 12:21 to go in the half. HPU decided to turn it on at that point, as junior David Rowlands of Dayton, Ohio/Moorpark hit a 3-pointer to spark a 10-0 run and the Sharks never trailed again. HPU put the game in double-digits with a pair of 3's from Godges that ignited a 14-0 run that became a 19-2 run to close the half with a 22-point 48-26 lead.

The Sharks opened the second half with a 10-3 run and kept the tempo going despite using their entire traveling squad.

The Sharks close their season-opening road trip on Wednesday night at Northwest University in Kirkland, Wash.
