Sharks Swept At Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University dropped its second straight match as Biola picked up a PacWest Conference sweep with the 3-0 win at Chase Gymnasium.
 
The Eagles (14-12, 11-7) ran through the Sharks (17-9, 13-5) 25-17, 25-19, 25-21. The Eagles took the season series 2-0 with the victory.
 
HPU hit just .098 for the match with two team blocks, while the Eagles hit .385 with 10 team blocks.
 
 The Sharks were led again by senior Perla Escobar of Calexico, Calif./Calexico who collected 10 kills with eight digs, and by junior Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge who posted nine kills and nine digs. Junior Abigail Wilmington of Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River posted two assisted blocks to lead the way a the net.
 
Biola was paced by Raegan Tjepkema with 13 kills and an .867 hitting percentage. Bekah Roth also had 13 kills with a .440 attack. Abigail Copeland tallied nine blocks to lead the Eagles.
 
The Sharks grabbed an early lead with the Eagles tying three times, the last at 6-6. That's when BU caught a 5-1 run and never trailed in the first set again. HPU pulled within three at 17-14 on a Collie kill, but the Eagles closed on an 8-3 run to win the set 25-17 on a Roth kill.
 
The Sharks used a 6-2 run to grab a four-point lead in the second set. With HPU up 18-15, the Eagles used a Tjepkema kill to start a 6-0 run and flip the score to a 21-18 BU lead. The Sharks got a point on an Eagle service error, but Biola took the last four points to win the set 25-19 on a Roth kill.
 
The final set was a battle. The two teams fought through 10 ties and four lead changes, with the last a heartbreaker. The Sharks were up 21-17 in the third on sophomore Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah collecting a kill. But Roth followed with a kill that keyed an 8-0 run that ended the set and match. A double block from Roth and Copeland gave the Eagles the 25-21 win.
 
HPU can't dwell on the loss as the Sharks are right back at it on Thursday when they visit Concordia Irvine. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. HST (7 p.m. PST) at the CU Arena.
