Golden Goal Lifts Sharks over Holy Names 2-1 in Double OT

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Senior Christian Porras scored the golden goal in the 102nd minute to lift Hawai'i Pacific University to a 2-1 PacWest Conference victory over Holy Names in double overtime on Saturday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The Sharks (6-8-2, 4-6-1) sent the senior class away in style as they outshot the Hawks (4-12-2, 1-8-2) 19-9 in the contest.

Porras, a senior from Rockville, Maryland, ended the game and the season with a rocket through the right side from a flip pass by junior Garrit Arzberger of Munich, Germany/Therese von Bayern who had picked up senior Luis Garcia's of Campo Grande, Brazil pass through center, clearing the bench in celebration.

The match wasn't as easy one, despite the numbers.

Holy Names was the first to hit the board in the 31st minute after a throw in from the left side and Louis Bellido, after throwing down an HPU midfielder, recovered the ball for a shot from the left corner of the box into the top right netting for an early 1-0 lead.

The Sharks answered back in the 34th minute. After two HPU shots were blocked in front of the HNU net, senior Isac Mansson's bicycle attempt deflected off a Hawk defender right to the foot of sophomore Makana Srivongsana of Honolulu/Kaiser who nailed it home to tie the game at 1-1.

The rugged second half was scoreless, but the Sharks were faced with six yellow cards and the fire grew as the game headed to overtime.

HPU turned up the attack in the overtime, but neither team could score until the quick breakaway by HPU in the second extra frame.

HPU junior goalkeeper Jeremy Zielinski of Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead posted five saves on nine shots. He finishes the season at an even 6-6.

HNU's Rafael Calderon suffered the loss on the night facing 19 shots with seven saves.

The win closed the season for the Sharks as they bid a hui hou to 11 seniors.
