Sharks Close Series With UH Hilo on Twinbill Split

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University beat Hawai'i Hilo 20-10 in the first game, but UH Hilo edged HPU 3-2 in the seven inning second contest as the teams split a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Hans L'Orange Park.
 
The Sharks (11-3) bashed out the 20 runs on 19 hits in the first game, but the Vulcans (3-6) held the Sharks to just five hits in the nightcap.
 
Senior centerfielder Tanner Tokunaga of of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City went 4-for-6 with two RBIs, five runs scored with two stolen bases to lead HPU. Sophomore third baseman Micah Layosa of Lihue, Hawai'i/Kauai went 2-for-7 with two RBIs and three runs scored on the day, while senior leftfielder Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis School went 3-for-3 in the first game with three RBIs and four runs scored.
 
Sophomore lefthander Conlan Myers of Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View got the win in game one in relief, striking out five and not allowing a hit in 4.2 innings of relief with two unearned runs and two walks.
 
HPU collected runs in big innings with eight runs in the third and five runs in the eighth in the 20-10 triumph. UHH starter Devan Elson (0-2) got the loss allowing nine runs (six earned) on six hits in 2.1 innings.
 
The second game saw UH Hilo break a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth with a John Bicos RBI single up the middle and made it stand in the seven-inning contest.
 
HPU loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning, but left the sacks jammed with a popup to end the inning. In the seventh, senior first baseman Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle doubled with two out and advanced to third on a passed ball, but was stranded on a strikeout.
 
Freshman Cole Mayeshiro of Mililani, Hawai'i/Mililani (1-1) got the loss, allowing the go-ahead run in the sixth on two hits. UH Hilo starter Travis Burleson (1-0) got the win allowing two runs on four hits in five innings. Reliever John Kea got his first save of the season allowing one hit in two innings.
 
The Sharks are back in action next Saturday when the host PacWest member Biola in a scheduled non-conference series at Hans L'Orange Park. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
