WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University chalked up a doubleheader sweep against PacWest Conference foe Biola 6-1 and 7-5 in a scheduled non-conference doubleheader Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (13-3) had to overcome deficits to the Eagles (3-4) in both contests, with the most dramatic coming in the second contest. HPU overcame a 5-0 deficit, getting a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle was 5-for-9 in the twinbill, including a 4-for-5 first game that featured two RBIs. Sophomore third baseman
Micah Layosa of Lihue, Hawai'i/Kauai went 4-for-9, with the game-winning RBIs in the second game.

Evan Spitzer of Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge (3-0) collected his third win of the season in the first game, recording seven strikeouts in six innings with an unearned run on four hits. Senior righthander
Joshua Savea of Gold River, Calif./Rio Americano struck out two and allowed a hit in two innings and junior righthander
Grant Dragmire of Elk Grove, Calif./Bradshaw Christian finished with a strikeout and a hit in an inning pitched.

Christian Miller of Brementon, Wash./Central Kitsap (1-1) got the win in relief in second contest, striking out seven and allowing two hits in 3.2 innings. Senior righthander
Ryan Sanchez of Atwater, Calif./Atwater, had one walk in a third of an inning. Starting lefthander
Joshua Muneno of Honolulu/Maryknoll allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with four strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Senior righty
Tyler Van Stone of Henderson, Nev./Foothill allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings.
In the first contest, the Eagles scored their only run in the first inning on a catcher's throwing error on a pickoff attempt at third that plated Ryan Gallegos.
That score held until the Sharks third, when Layosa tripled to right center with one out and senior leftfielder
Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis School followed with an RBI single through the left side. Mopas stole second and went to third on a passed ball and was driven in by Kapeliela's RBI single.
HPU added two more in the seventh and two in the eighth. The seventh featured a Kapeliela RBI double and a sacrifice fly from freshman catcher
Kyle Layugan of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Mid-Pacific Institute. In the eighth, a throwing error allowed junior shortstop Matt Tsutomi of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City to score and a Mopas sacrifice fly tallied another run.
The Sharks kept the Eagles off the board again in the ninth by turning a diving catch by Mopas into a double-play and Dragmire ending the game with a strikeout.
Brayden Englert (0-1) got the loss for the Eagles, allowing two runs on 10 hits with two walks and a strikeout. Honus Kindreich allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits in 1.1 innings, and Joey Leavitt gave up two unearned runs on two hits with a strikeout and walk in an inning of work.
The second game looked to be an Eagle rout. Biola got an unearned run in the first, got home runs from Jerron Largusa and RJ Bates in the fourth, a Largusa RBI double in the fifth and an RBI sacrifice bunt from Joey Magro in the sixth for a 5-0 lead.
The Sharks struck back with two out in the bottom of the sixth. Tsutomi got an RBI single to put HPU on the board, then junior pinch-hitter
Jalen Bustos of Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd rapped a two RBI triple to right center to pull within two at 5-3. A passed ball brought home Bustos, and an RBI single from Layosa capped the scoring and tied the game a 5-5.
The Sharks broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth. Senior centerfielder
Tanner Tokunaga of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City opened the inning on throwing error and was sacrificed to second. Layosa sent an RBI double to the fence in left center to give HPU the lead, and Mopas followed with an RBI single for an insurance run.
Miller allowed a leadoff single to the Eagles in the ninth before getting a pair of strikeouts and a lineout to end the game.
BU's Larson Kindreich (0-2) got the loss after allowing the two runs (one unearned) in the eighth on four hits with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Starter Troy Stainbrook was lifted after five innings after striking out five and allowing just one hit in five innings. Josh Ludeman gave up the five runs in the sixth on four hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.
The Sharks and Eagles play another non-conference doubleheader on Monday at Hans L'Orange Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
