Sharks Split With Pacific On Sunday

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University split games a second doubleheader against Pacific University (Ore.) at Sand Island Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Sharks (6-8) suffered a 3-2 loss to the Boxers (5-4) in the game one that counted as an official game for HPU, then claimed a 5-4 win in the designated exhibition contest for the Sharks at the oceanside park.

In the first game, the Boxers were the first to strike with a double off the center field fence from Kaitlynn Donaca and an RBI single through the right side by Hailey Miller making it 1-0 Pacific. Pacific topped that with a pair of runs in the fourth on two base hits and a ground out advancing the two runners. Nicole Martinez was brought in on a sacrifice fly and Kiana Kushiyama scored on an HPU throwing error as the Boxer went up 3-0.

The Sharks hit the board in the sixth with walks to freshman Leipua Kaui of Kapa'a, Hawai'i/Kapa'a and pitcher Jordan Curry of Farmington, N.M./Farmington. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and sophomore Cieana Curran of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/ Campbell tallied the RBI single down the right field line.

The Sharks had a chance to tie the game in the seventh starting with a triple from freshman Noel Saunders of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City, who scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman making it 3-2. Kaui walked and freshman Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/ Leilehua picked up an infield base hit to put runners on first and second. However, the Boxers closed the game with a final strike out for the win.

The senior Curry (5-2) threw all seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout throughout 97 pitches on the day. It was her second loss on the season.

Pacific's Carly Bursch (1-0) also threw all seven frames for a total of 127 pitches. She allowed two earned runs on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts to pick up her first win of the season.

The second game started with both teams picking up a pair of runs in the first frame. Pacific's first run scored on a fielder's choice and the second run scored on continuation of the play with a throw to second to retire the batter trying to advance.

The Sharks answered as senior Tiana Cantero-Kawelo of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua tallying a base hit through the right side. Dias bunted for a single, and a Boxer overthrow at first allowed Cantero-Kawelo to score on the play. Kaui walked and Leong grounded out to score Dias to tie the game at 2-2.

HPU gained the lead with a single run in the third from another base hit by Cantero-Kawelo who was sacrificed to second and allowed to score again off a Pacific fielding error giving the Sharks a 3-2 advantage.

The Boxers tied the contest in the fifth off a base hit, ground out advancing the runner, and an HPU fielding error with a throw home attempt.

In the bottom of the sixth, HPU picked up the final two runs to take the win. Leong was hit by a pitch then sacrificed to second by sophomore Mary Dungey of Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado. Curry tallied the game winning RBI with a double to right center and scored off a wild pitch followed by a throwing error to third base.

Senior Alexis Morales (2-1) of San Diego/Mater Dei Catholic pitched all seven frames allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits with a walk and a strikeout for the exhibition win.

Pacific's Rylee Patton (1-1) pitched for all six innings allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits with three walks. She picked up her first loss of the season as the game was regulation for the Boxers.

HPU was led by Cantero-Kawelo who went 2-for-3 in the game with two runs scored. Curry went 1-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt and an RBI.

The Sharks are back in action on Monday against the NAIA's Marymount California University in another exhibition doubleheader for HPU at Sand Island Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
