WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University freshman
Shane Adams hurled a two-hit complete game shutout in game two as HPU split a doubleheader with Biola (Calif.) on Monday at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (14-4) dropped game one to the Eagles (4-5) 10-6, but behind Adams won the seven-inning nightcap 4-0 to conclude a designated non-conference series between the PacWest foes.
Adams (3-0), a true freshman righthander from Honolulu/Mid-Pacific Institute, allowed two hits and three walks while fanning six in picking up his first career shutout and his third win.
Senior first baseman
Christian Kapeliela of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle was the HPU offensive star of the twinbill, going 4-for-7 with a double, a triple, two RBIs and a run scored.
HPU scored all of the game two's runs in the bottom of the fifth, as freshman shortstop Dylan Kurahasi-Choy Foo of Waimanalo, Hawai'i/Kailua started things with a base hit to right center. He was sacrificed to second by junior second baseman
Trey Yukumoto of Waipahu, Hawai'i/Leilehua and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior centerfielder
Tanner Tokunaga of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City rapped a single through the left side for the first run. He collected two more bags himself, one on a wild pitch and a stolen base. Junior rightfielder
Sean Coffey of Boise, Idaho/Centennial added an RBI on a sacrifice fly to bring in Tokunaga for a 2-0 lead. following a walk, senior leftfielder
Jordan Mopas of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/St. Louis School laced an RBI double down the third base line. Kapeliela brought home Mopas with an RBI single to left.
Biola had a couple of opportunities as second baseman Robert Anthony Cruz got both Eagle hits, a single in the second and a double in the fourth, but was stranded both times.
BU's Josh Ludeman pitched the first two innings allowing two hits with two strikeouts. Tyler Mead (0-1) took the loss throwing 2.1 innings giving up two earned runs on two hits. Bentley Acee went for one-third of an inning and faced two batters giving up an earned run on no hits. Honus Kindreich faced three batters and gave up an earned run on two hits and a walk. Chris Despars closed the game with one-and-a third inning allowing a hit and two walks while taking three strikeouts.
In the first contest, the Sharks plated two runs in the first inning and topped it with another run in the second. Coffey of Boise, Idaho/Centennial started things off with a base hit through the ride side backed by sophomore
Micah Layosa of Lihue, Hawai'i/Kauai who fired a shot down the third base line and beat out the throw for a hit. But in trying to make the play at first, BU's third baseman overthrew the bag allowing both runners to advance. Mopas brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Kapeliela brought in Layosa with a ground out making for a 2-0 Sharks lead.
Freshman
Kyle Layugan of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Mid-Pacific doubled to deep left to start the second, was balked to third and brought home Tokunaga's RBI single through the middle.
Biolan answered with four runs for the lead in the top of the third. A lead-off triple to right center from Cole Beemer followed by a hit batter set up Brandon Cody for a three-run homer, bombed over the left field fence tying the game. Another walked batter was brought in from a double off the center field fence as the Eagles grabbed the lead 4-3.
In the fifth the Eagles pushed the advantage to 7-3 as Jerron Largusa ripped a two-run homer to left field and RJ Bates added an RBI single for a 7-3 lead.
After three scoreless innings, HPU came back for the rebuttal in the bottom of the eighth. With two out, Kapeliela cranked a triple off the center field fence and scored on a passed ball taking it to 7-4. Pinch hitter
Jake Selco of West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real took the walk and Layugan was hit by a pitch to get on. Senior pinch hitter
Marc Sauceda of Temecula, Calif./Chaparral lined a two RBI double straight down the right field line bringing the Sharks within one at 7-6.
The Eagles came right back in the top of the ninth on two hits followed by a walk to load the bases. A double from Bates gave Biola an extra two and a final RBI ground out gave BU a 10-6 lead and the game.
Senior righty
Jordan Gesling (0-1) of Lennox, S.D./Roosevelt took the loss in game one allowing four earned runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Junior
Nick O'Connor of Las Vegas, Nev./Chaparral also 2.1 innings allowing three earned runs on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Junior
Brady Johnson of Beaverton, Ore./Westview went 2.2 innings allowing three hits and a walk with four of his own strikeouts. Junior
Travis Paynter of Port Angeles, Wash./Port Angeles pitched for two-thirds of an inning allowing two hits with a walk and two strikeouts while senior
Tyler Van Stone of Henderson, Nev./Foothill closed out the final inning allowing a hit with two strikeouts.
Biola's Dallas Burk pitched for four full frames allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and one strikeout, but did not get a decision. Anthony Villegas (2-0) clocked 3.2 innings allowing three earned runs on four hits and three walks and two strikeouts for the win. Ludeman, who would start game two, closed the game with an inning-and-a third without a hit and allowed one walk to pick up his first save of the season.
The Sharks resume PacWest Conference play on Saturday as they face off against Fresno Pacific. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Hans L'Orange Park.
