HPU Falls At Biola 70-56

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University held a brief early lead but homestanding Biola recovered and led the rest of the way in taking the PacWest Conference contest 70-56 on Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.
 
The Sharks (7-19, 4-17) finished the road portion of its schedule as the Eagles (14-12, 10-10) won its second game in a five-game homestand to end the season.
 
Senior Jonathan Janssen of Noosa Heads, Australia/Mountain State led the Sharks with 20 points, while sophomore David Rowlands of Dayton, Ohio/Moorpark came off the bench with 13 points. Junior Scott Ulaneo of Rome, Italy/St. George's International added nine points with five rebounds. Junior Ronald Blain of McDonough, Ga./Union Grove led HPU with eight rebounds as he scored three points.
 
The Eagles were led by Trevor Treinen with 27 points with seven rebounds and five assists. Michael Bagatourian added 18 points, while Alex Talma double-doubled with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
 
The Sharks hit 33 percent from the field (17-of-52), including 8-of-23 (35 percent) from the 3-point arc. HPU made 14-of-20 (70 percent) from the foul line. Biola shot 51 percent from the floor (27-of-53) and 13-of-26 (50 percent) from the arc. The Eagles also shot 50 percent (3-of-6) from the charity stripe. Biola won the glass 38-30, but HPU suffered nine turnovers to the Eagles 13.
 
Janssen opened the scoring with a 3-pointer at the 17:53 mark, but the lead was short lived as Treinen followed with a tying triple 18 seconds later. That started an 11-0 run for the Eagles and they never looked back.
 
HPU came back with a 7-0 run to get within a point at 11-10 on a 3-pointer from junior Neema Namdar of Sandy, Utah/Alta. However, a 13-0 run followed for the Eagles, who extended the lead to 21 at 35-14 at halftime.
 
The Eagles extended the led to 27 with 12:31 to play in the game, but the Sharks rallied to cut the lead to 14 late. The teams exchanged scores before Rowland made two free throws with 31 seconds to go for the 70-56 differential.
 
The Sharks return home to close the season next Saturday, March 2, by hosting Notre Dame de Namur for Senior Day. Tipoff at Moanalua High School gym is set for 3 p.m.
