HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University scored in every inning in both ends of a PacWest Conference doubleheader in sweeping Notre Dame de Namur in five innings each 20-3 and 14-0 on Wednesday at Sand Island Park.
The Sharks (10-8, 4-0) remained unbeaten with the two wins, while the Argonauts (0-11, 0-6) remained winless on the season.
Senior righthander
Jordan Curry (7-2) of Farmington, N.M./Farmington, hurled the five-inning one-hit shutout in the second game allowing three walks to go with three strikeouts. In the first contest, junior Emily Leonard (2-2) of LaMirada, Calif./St. Paul struck out four allowing three unearned runs in the fifth and a total of three hits in five innings to even her record.
Junior third baseman
Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman led the offensive barrage, going 5-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBIs. Sophomore centerfielder
Cieana Curran of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell was 5-for-6 with a triple, her first home run of the season and four RBIs.
HPU opened the twinbill by scoring five runs in the opening inning thanks to an RBI single from Dias, an RBI single from freshman rightfielder
Noel Saunders from Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City, a sacrifice foul fly from Leonard, an RBI double from sophomore catcher
Mary Dungey of Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado and an RBI single from Curran.
In the only single run inning of the day, HPU scored thanks to a sacrifice fly from freshman
Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua for a 6-0 lead.
The Sharks collected nine runs in the third with RBI singles from Dias, Saunders, Leonard along with a wild pitch for a 10-0 advantage. Then came Leong with an RBI double, followed by a two RBI single from Dungey. Sophomore pinch hitter
Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for an RBI and fielding error by NDNU made it 15-0.
After holding the Argos again, the Sharks plated five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore pinch hitter
Ashley Iseri of Cerritos, Calif./Whitney drew a bases loaded walk, Curran smacked a sacrifice fly, freshman first baseman
Leipua Kaui of Kapa'a, Hawai'i/Kapa'a added an RBI single and Leonard chalked up a bases-loaded walk to give HPU a 20-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, NDNU used two throwing errors by the Sharks and two sacrifice flies to score three runs before ending the inning and the game to the mercy rule 20-3. Sofia Garcia (0-4) took the loss as three Argo pitchers saw action.
The second was a continuation of the offensive barrage, with the Sharks scoring four times in the first inning, as Kaui cleared the bases with a three RBI triple to right center and Leonard added a sac fly to drive in Kaui with the fourth run.
HPU added two runs in both the second and third innings. Senior second baseman
Tiana Cantero-Kawelo of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua smashed an RBI triple and Saunders add a ground out RBI in the second. An Argo fielding error after a Dungey double scored one and an RBI triple from Curran scored the second in the third for an 8-0 lead.
The Sharks took advantage of two NDNU errors to load the bases, then got a walk from freshman pinch hitter
Hailey McKim of Linn, Mo./Linn for one run. With two out, the Sharks put the exclamation mark on the game when junior pinch hitter Brazzlyn Tovio-Asato crushed an 0-1 pitch over the center field fence for a grand slam. Curran made it two exclamation points with her first home run of the year on the next pitch for a 14-0 win.
Argo pitcher Katie Bettis went the distance, allowing 14 runs (six earned) on 11 hits in her four innings.
The teams play a second doubleheader on Thursday. Once again due to the wet grounds at
Howard Okita Field in Kaneohe, the Sharks and Argos will play at Sand Island Park with an 11 a.m. first pitch.
