Sharks Sweep Notre Dame de Namur For Second Day

HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University picked up another doubleheader sweep of Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday, winning 10-1 in five innings and 8-1 at Sand Island Park.
 
The Sharks (12-8, 6-0) allowed the Argonauts (0-13, 0-8) to score the first run in both contests before shutting NDNU down the rest of the way.
 
Freshman second baseman Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua, had a big afternoon going 5-for-6 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman rightfielder Noel Saunders from Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City, went 3-for-6 at the plate, with a double, four RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore catcher Mary Dungey of Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado was 3-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and three runs scored on the day.
 
Senior righthander Alexis Morales (2-1) of San Diego, Calif./Mater Dei Catholic won the first game, hurling all five innings and allowing an unearned run on three hits with five walks. Senior righty Jordan Curry (8-2) of Farmington, N.M./Farmington, tossed her sixth complete game of the season in winning the second contest. She struck out seven and allowed a run on five hits and three walks in seven innings in leading the PacWest in wins this season.
 
In the first contest, a pair of first-inning HPU errors allowed NDNU to get a 1-0 lead before the Sharks answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on a two RBI single to right by Leong.
 
The Sharks added three more in the second. Saunders belted a two RBI double to right center, and later scored while freshman first baseman Leipua Kaui of Kapa'a, Hawai'i/Kapa'a was caught in a rundown in trying to steal a base.
 
HPU plated five more in the third when Dungey singled to load the bases and sophomore centerfielder Cieana Curran of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell followed with an RBI single. Junior pinch hitter Brazzlyn Tovio-Asato of Kapolei, Hawai'i/University Lab drew an RBI walk, Dungey scored on a wild pitch, Curran a passed ball and senior second baseman Tiana Cantero-Kawelo of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua scored during another rundown during a double steal.
 
NDNU's Katie Bettis (0-6) suffered the loss, allowing the 10 runs, nine earned, on six hits and eight walks, with a strikeout. Selena Sandoval pitched the final inning allowing a hit and a walk with a strikeout.
 
The second contest once again saw the Argos score first in the top of the second on an RBI ground out following a leadoff single and double.
 
HPU tied the game in the bottom of the second on an Argo throwing error that allowed Leong to score.
 
The Sharks took the lead with a run in the third on an RBI ground ball by Saunders that scored Cantero-Kawelo for the 2-1 lead.
 
HPU broke the game open in the fourth. Leong opened the offense with a one-out triple and scored on Dungey's RBI single. After a pop-out, Cantero-Kawelo followed with an RBI single. Then junior third baseman Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman rapped a two RBI double but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple and led 6-1.
 
That score held into the bottom of the sixth, when Dungey tripled, sophomore pinch hitter Ashley Iseri of Cerritos, Calif./Whitney followed with an RBI double to left. The final run occured when Curren came home on an Argo error to lead 8-1.
 
The Argos Sofia Garcia (0-5) went the distance in picking up the loss, allowing eight runs, four unearned, on 10 hits with three strikeouts.
 
HPU is off until next Tuesday when the Sharks return to PacWest Conference play by hosting Holy Names. The doubleheader is scheduled for HPU's Howard Okita Field in Kaneohe, with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
