Sharks Roll Silverswords 83-47 For Ninth Straight Win

HONOLULU – The Hawai'i Pacific University women never trailed in trouncing cross-town rival Chaminade 83-47 in PacWest Conference play on Monday evening at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.
 
The Sharks (16-5, 14-1) won their ninth straight game and picked up their 15th win in the last 16 games. The Silverswords (4-14, 3-11) dropped its sixth straight game.
 
The Sharks opened the game on a 7-0 run and never looked back.
 
Senior Breanna Mackenzie of Melbourne, Australia/Box Hill recorded her second double-double of the season with tying her season-high with 20 points and tallying 10 rebounds with three assists and a block in 27 minutes of action. Sophomore Alysha Marcucci of Melbourne, Australia/Marist-Sion racked up 17 points and five rebounds with three steals and three assists in 32 minutes. Freshman Amy Baum of Melbourne, Australia/Rowville Secondary, scored 13 points with six rebounds and three steals, while junior Starr Rivera added 12 points with three assists and a steal.
 
Chaminade was led by Michaella Dean with 12 points, as Hunter Liftee posted 10 points with five rebounds. Destiny Castro was held to nine points, but grabbed four rebounds and three steals. Arianna Blowe led the Swords on the glass with seven rebounds.
 
HPU shot 43 percent (27-of-63) from the floor and hit a season-high 13 3-point field goals in going 13-of-27 (48 percent) from the arc. The Sharks connected on 16-of-19 from the free throw line (84 percent). Chaminade was held to 26 percent from the field (15-of-57), and just 11 percent (2-of-19) from the 3-point arc. The Swords made 15-of-26 (58 percent) from the foul line. HPU outrebounded CUH 50-34, but turned the ball over 13 times to the Swords 10.
 
HPU used a Makenzie layup and a Marcucci 3-pointer on the way to a 7-0 run to start the game. After a layup by Blowe for the Swords, Mackenzie hit a 3 and senior Samantha Lambrigtsen of Oregon, Ill./Oregon HS added another as part of an 8-1 run for a 15-3 start that doomed Chaminade from the get-go. The Swords got four quick points before HPU closed the quarter with an 11-0 run in the final 1:43 before the horn for a 26-7 lead.
 
The second quarter saw a back-and-fourth battle early, when the Sharks ripped off another 9-1 run capped by a Mackenzie layup to go up by 23 points. A Castro jumper in the closing seconds cut the lead to 21 before Baum banked a 3-pointer off the glass at the halftime horn to go up by 24 at 45-21.
 
The Sharks kept rolling in the third quarter, using a 15-0 run to extend the lead to 39 points and took a 70-33 lead after three quarters.
 
With ony three of the starters playing a couple of minutes in the final period, HPU built a 43-point lead before running down the clock and the Silverswords trimmed the HPU lead. Sophomore Makenna Gambee of Hillsboro, Ore./Hillsboro closed the game with a free throw with 12 seconds to play for the 83-47 win.
 
The Sharks now have a showdown game on Wednesday, when they host Dominican (Calif.) at the Blaisdell. Dominican is the only team that has beaten the Sharks in PacWest play. Tipoff on Wednesday is set for 4:30 p.m.
