SAN ANTONIO – No. 16 Hawai'i Pacific University lost for the first time this season as No. 1 Barry defeated HPU 5-2 at the Northside Tennis Center on Tuesday.
The 16th ranked Sharks (6-1) battled the top ranked Buccaneers (6-1) throughout the match.
The Sharks highlight came at No. 1 singles, where 31st ranked Valentin Masse upset second ranked Pierre Montrieul 6-3, 6-4 for one of the two HPU points.
HPU's other win came at No. 5 singles, where
Maxime Gayte beat Daniel Ventura 6-3, 6-4.
HPU was swept in doubles action for the point, with the Bucs Montrieul and Blake Bayldon beating Gayte and Masse 6-4 at No. 1, Alejandro Palacios and Filip Zupancic downing
Lukas Bauer and
Cheng-Chieh Wang 6-3 at No. 2, and Carlos Gomez and Vivien Versier defeating
Benjamin Loccisano and
Ondrej Ctverak 6-4 at No. 3.
The top ranked Bucs also collected the remaining four singles points.
No. 6 Gomez won at No. 2 against Ctverak 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, as Palacios claimed No. 3 against Wang 6-4, 6-3. At No. 4, 44th ranked Versier beat Loccisano 6-4, 6-1, while at No. 6 Bayldon beat Bauer 6-1, 6-1.
The No. 16 Sharks play their second match in the Alamo city on Wednesday as they square off against 10th ranked Southwest Baptist (Mo.). Match time at the Northside Tennis Center is slated for 4:30 a.m. HST (9:30 a.m. CDT).
