SAN ANTONIO – No. 16 Hawai'i Pacific University dropped only one point as they defeated home-town team St. Mary's (Texas) 4-1 on Friday at the Annemarie Tennis Center.
The 16th ranked Sharks (9-1) handed the unranked Rattlers (2-10) their seventh straight loss.
The Sharks picked up wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, as HPU scratched normal No. 1 player Valentin Masse after doubles and moved up players.
Lucas Poock won at No. 6 defeating Louis Bonnay 7-5, 7-5, before
Jonatan Lundahl won at No. 5 against Brendan Brown 7-5, 6-3 to clinch and end the match. HPU also won at No. 3 singles with
Benjamin Loccisano beating Jose Antelo 6-2, 6-4.
St. Mary's won at No. 2 singles with Bojan Popovic taking
Cheng-Chieh Wang 7-5, 7-6.
Unfinished matches were at No. 1 where
Ondrej Ctverak split sets with STMU's 18th ranked Jeremiah Gonzalez 2-6, 6-2, 1-1, and at No. 4 where
Maxime Gayte fell in set one to Alex Gee in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-5) and was ahead 5-2 when the match was called.
In doubles, the Sharks took the point winning at No. 1 and No. 3, and led at No. 2. Masse/Gayte took No. 1 against Popovic/Gonzalez 6-2, with Loccisano/Ctverak taking down Gee/Saisaurav Konakanchi 6-3. Wang/Lucas Bauer were up on Brown/Antelo 5-3 when HPU claimed the point.
HPU closes its 12-day, 10-match road trip on Saturday in the Alamo city, taking on nearby St. Edward's (Texas) of Austin at the Annemarie Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 4:30 a.m. HST (9:30 a.m. CDT).
