Sharks Win Twice In Run-Rule Sweep of Dominican

KANEOHE, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University run ruled Dominican (Calif.) in both ends of a PacWest Conference doubleheader 10-2 and 8-0, both in five innings, at Howard A. Okita Field.

The Sharks (22-16, 15-7) downed the Penguins (5-12, 4-12) in a snappy three hours and 12 minutes.

Junior Emily Leonard, of La Mirada, Calif./St. Paul pitched the full five innings of the first game allowing two earned runs on just two hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Jordan "JoJo" Curry of Farmington, N.M./Farmington threw just 59 pitches in game two allowing only two base hits and no walks. She also grabbed five strikeouts in knabbing her fourth complete game shut of the year.

Sophomore center-fielder Cieana Curran of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell went 4-for-4 on the day with two runs scored making her 6-for-6 in the past three games. Catcher Mary Dungey of Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado was 3-for-4 on the day with 3 RBI and two runs scored while Leonard went 4-for-7 on the day (3-for-3 in game two) with 3 RBI and three runs scored.

The Sharks came out swinging putting up three runs in the first inning. Junior Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman got on base as a result of a Dominican fielding error, and freshman Noel Saunders of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City brought her to second with a base hit. Leonard loaded the bases on yet another Penguin error.  Dungey walked for a free RBI, and Curry picked up the other two RBI's on a single to center field making it 3-0 Sharks.

HPU doubled their lead in the third starting with freshman Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua tallying her first homer of the season over the left field fence. Dungey followed right after with a double down the right field line, advanced to third on a ground out, and was scored by sophomore Ashley Iseri of Cerritos, Calif./Whitney with a base hit. Iseri was eventually brought in on a sacrifice fly from senior Tiana Cantero-Kawelo of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua making it 6-0 after three. The seventh run came in the fourth from Leonard with her fourth home-run of the season half-way up the pine trees behind center field.

Dominican answered back with two runs in the fifth on a lead-off double followed by three consecutive walks to score one and a sacrifice fly to bring in the other making it 7-2.

HPU sealed the deal in the bottom of the frame with five consecutive walked batters, and a base hit from Dungey to win the game 10-2.

Dominican's Lauren Persi (3-4) threw 2.1 innings allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits with three walks in taking the loss. Rosa Leguria pitched 2.0 innings allowing five earned runs, including the game ending single, on four hits with three walks.

In the one hour and thirteen minute second game shutout, HPU picked up their first two runs in the third inning. Cantero-Kawelo reached base on a fielder's choice and stole second while Dias walked. Saunders sacrificed to advance both runners and Leonard cranked a double to right center field for two RBI.

The fifth inning was a bloodbath with the Sharks posting the six runs to end the game at 8-0. Freshman catcher Hailey McKim of Linn, Mo./Linn was walked, and sophomore Miki Takara of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Maryknoll took her place to run bases and run bases she did. "Moots" advanced to third on an overthrow pickoff attempt at first and was brought in by Curran. After stealing second and advancing to third on another single from Cantero-Kawelo, Curran was brought home by a ground-out from Dias. Saunders brought in Cantero-Kawelo, and Leonard advanced her to second. Dungey pinch hit for Curry and picked up a base hit while advancing to second on a Dominican fielding error scoring Saunders. The final run was brought in by Takara with a base hit down the left field line.

DUC's Alyssa Waltman pitched 4.2 innings allowing eight runs (six earned) on nine hits with three walks in taking the loss. Persi came back and allowed a walk along with the winning hit.
