AZUSA, Calif. – No. 16 Hawai'i Pacific University upset No. 11 Azusa Pacific 5-2 in men's tennis action on Monday at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Courts on the APU campus.
The 16th ranked Sharks (3-0) opened a nine-match mainland road trip with the victory by handing the No. 11 Cougars (8-1) their first loss of the season.
The Sharks claimed the doubles point while splitting the three sets. HPU's
Lukas Bauer and
Cheng-Chieh Wang won at no. 2 doubles over Ryan Nuno and Leyton Bohren 6-1, only to have APU's Ronald Kang and Ethan Smith beat Sharks
Ondrej Ctverak and
Benjamin Loccisano 6-1 at no. 3. HPU gained the point as Sharks
Maxime Gayte and Valentin Masse outlasted Cougars Jesse Haas and Jakob Schnaitter 7-5 at no. 1.
In singles action, the Sharks claimed the early lead with Loccisano winning at the no. 4 spot against Bohren 6-2, 6-2.
However APU came back to tie the match by winning at no. 2 as Nuno downed Ctverak 6-3, 6-2, and Schnaitter winning at no. 1 against Masse 6-4, 6-3.
HPU followed with Gayte beating Haas 6-3, 6-4 at no. 5, then winning the match with Bauer dumping Dillon Barnard 7-5, 6-2 at no. 6. Wang closed out the contest for the Sharks by winning a three-setter at no. 3 over Kang 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 10-6.
The Sharks are in action again at Point Loma on Wednesday, with the match starting at 9 a.m. HST (11 a.m. PST).
