LA JOLLA, Calif. – No. 4 Hawai'i Pacific University took the doubles point and the first three singles matches on the way to a 4-3 victory over No. 22 UC San Diego on Friday afternoon at the Northview Tennis Courts.
The No. 4 Sharks (5-1) won three of the first four points to win the contest, then saw the Tritons (4-5) take the final two positions.
HPU won the doubles point by taking the No. 1 and No. 3 sets.
Elodie Busson and
Elisa Elhadj beat Ashley Chao and Becky Chou 6-4 at No. 1, and
Debora Echeverria and
Sarah Ikioka outlasted Shweta Kumar and Chloe Wight 7-6 winning the tiebreaker 8-6. UCSD took No. 2 doubles with Madison Hale and Alexandra Weil downing
Heloise Le Normand and
Mihoki Miyahara 6-3.
The Sharks took the first two singles points as Busson won at No. 1 over Chao 6-1, 6-4, and Elhadj ripped Weil 6-3, 6-2. UCSD picked up its first point at No. 6 singles with Kumar beating Le Normand 6-2, 6-4.
HPU then clinched the match when Miyahara defeated Chou 6-3, 7-5 for the fourth point.
UCSD got the remaining two with Valeria Corral taking a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) win against Echeverria at No. 4, and Wight won in three sets against HPU's
Nicole Ballach 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The victory closed the California portion of the mainland trip for the Sharks women. HPU travels to San Antonio for a series of four matches starting on Monday when the Sharks meet No. 23 Tarleton State (Texas) at 4:30 a.m. HST (9:30 a.m. CDT).
