SURPRISE, Ariz. – No. 3 and top-seeded Hawai'i Pacific University chalked up the school's sixth PacWest Conference Men's Championship in seven years in beating No. 17 Hawai'i Hilo 4-2 in the championship match of the 2019 PacWest Conference Championships at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex Saturday morning.
The third ranked Sharks (15-4) avenged a 4-2 loss to the Vulcans (12-4) on April 6 in Honolulu.
The Sharks opened by taking the doubles point quickly, as
Ondrej Ctverak and
Benjamin Loccisano won at No. 3 over Luca Checchia and Alan Cincunegui 6-3, moments before HPU's 12th ranked pair of Valentin Masse and
Maxime Gayte beat Vaclav Slezak and Martin Soukal 6-3 at No. 1. The No. 2 flight was unfinished as
Lukas Bauer and
Cheng-Chieh Wang were tied 4-4 with Alessandro Giuliato and Chun En Wu when the point was won.
The Sharks went up 2-0 as No. 25 Masse upset ninth ranked Slezak 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1. The Vulcans got on the scoreboard when 24th Giuliato beat Ctverak 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2.
HPU got the 3-1 advantage when Wang took No. 5 against Auturo Dell'eva 6-4, 6-4, but UHH grabbed a point at No. 3 as 50th ranked Soukal beat 74th ranked Loccisano 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 to make it 3-2.
At No. 6, Bauer downed Checchia 6-1 in the first set, but the duo battled in the second. Bauer took the 5-4 lead and held serve to win the set 6-4 and returned the Sharks to the championship.
Masse was named the PacWest Tournament Most Outstanding Player for his strong week of play.
HPU earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament and awaits the determination of its opponent on May 7. An NCAA West Regional match will be either May 11th or 12th.
